Tigers sweep doubleheader against Gardner-Webb

Clemson, SC -

Jeff Schaus went 4-for-4 to lead #16 Clemson to a season-high 20 hits and a 12-0 victory over Gardner-Webb in the second game of a doubleheader at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Saturday night. The Tigers, who took a 2-0 lead in the series, improved to 31-15, while the Bulldogs dropped to 28-16-1. The victory was Jack Leggett's 800th as Clemson's head coach.

The Tigers scored in seven of the eight innings in which they batted. Clemson, who totaled 11 two-out hits in the contest, scored five two-out runs in the fourth inning to break the game open and the pitching staff recorded its fifth team shutout of the season.

Starter Jonathan Meyer (5-1) pitched 6.1 effective innings to earn the win. He gave up just three hits (all singles), no runs, and no walks with one strikeout. The San Diego, CA native threw just 53 pitches, 43 of which were strikes, and did not throw more than two balls to any Bulldog batter. Meyer also faced just one batter over the minimum, allowed one runner past first base, and none past second base.

Joseph Moorefield retired both batters he faced, then freshman righthanders Kevin Pohle and Matt Campbell both pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts apiece to close out the game. The four Tiger pitchers combined to allow just two runners past first base and none past second base against a team that entered the week sixth in the nation in batting average (.323).

Eric Heiligenstadt (3-4), the first of three Gardner-Webb hurlers, suffered the loss. He surrendered 13 hits, eight runs, and no walks with one strikeout in 4.0 innings pitched.

The Tigers wasted little time taking the game's first lead in the first inning. John Hinson led off with a single through the right side, stole second, and moved to third on Phil Pohl's groundout to second. Hinson scored on a wild pitch. Richie Shaffer kept the inning alive with a two-out single to left field and moved to third on Schaus' bloop single to right-center. Will Lamb followed with a single through the right side to score Shaffer and up his hitting streak to 21 games.

In the third inning, Schaus lined a two-out single to center, stole second, and scored on Lamb's single through the left side.

Clemson added five runs to its lead in the fourth inning. Steve Wilkerson lined a one-out single to left field and Hinson singled to left-center. Pohl reached on a fielder's choice as Hinson was retired at second base for out #2, then Brad Miller belted a double to left-center to plate Wilkerson and Pohl. Shaffer followed with a long two-run homer to left field, his sixth long ball of the season. After Schaus reached on an infield single, he scored on Lamb's double to right-center. Schaus, who registered his 200th career RBI in the first game of the doubleheader, scored his 200th career run on Lamb's two-bagger.

In the fifth inning, Jason Stolz led off with an infield single and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Wilkerson hit a one-out single through the right side to score Stolz.

Miller led off the sixth inning with a walk on four pitches and Shaffer singled through the left side. Schaus followed with a double down the right-field line to score Miller.

In the seventh inning, Pohl hit a one-out single to left-center. Two batters later, Shaffer drew a two-out walk. Pinch-hitter Joe Costigan reached on a throwing error by shortstop Aaron Miller and Pohl scored from second base on the play. It was the first error by either team in the series.

In the eighth inning, Mike Dunster led off with a single through the right side and Jon McGibbon walked. Wilkerson flied into a double play as McGibbon was out at second base. Pinch-hitter Kevin Caughman then laced a two-out double to left field to score Dunster. It was Caughman's first career hit.

Schaus went 4-for-4 with a double, RBI, two runs, and a steal to lead Clemson's 20-hit attack. Hinson went 3-for-5 with a triple, run, and steal. Shaffer went 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs, two runs, and a walk, while Lamb went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

Five different Bulldogs accounted for the team's five hits.

Clemson and Gardner-Webb will play the finale of the three-game series at John Henry Moss Stadium in Boiling Springs, NC on Sunday at 2:00 PM.
