Tigers survive crazy night in Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Some of the numbers from Thursday night’s game don’t quite tell the story.

Clemson’s offense got late touchdowns from both Artavis ScottArtavis Scott

and Clemson overcame a fourth quarter tie in beating Wake Forest 34-20 at BB&T Field Thursday night.

Clemson’s (7-2, 6-1 ACC) defense gave up a measly 119 total yards of offense to Wake Forest – almost a hundred yards under their NCAA-worst average – but the Demon Deacons (2-7, 0-5) took advantage of two Clemson turnovers and multiple Clemson penalties in scoring their 20 points.

Wake Forest quarterback John Wolford was just 11-for-29 for 88 yards on the night, and the Deacs rushed the ball 34 times for a whopping seven yards. Clemson had 13 tackles for loss and five sacks on the night.

Clemson wound up with 425 total yards of offense and got a second straight 100-yard game from Gallman as the offense did just enough in the second half to secure the win. Gallman had 19 carries for 106 yards – he gained 101 yards against Syracuse the last time out.

Scott had another superlative outing, catching eight passes for 122 yards and two scores. The Tigers had eight penalties for 75 yards, including a targeting penalty on senior safety Robert SmithRobert Smith

that saw him ejected. Unless a review changes the ruling, Smith will have to miss the first half of next week's game at Georgia Tech.

Things started gloomy for the Clemson offense – a punt on their first possession and a turnover on the second. Cole StoudtCole Stoudt

dropped back to pass on third down, and his pass into double coverage was picked off at Clemson’s 43-yard line.

The Demon Deacons took advantage by opening the playbook – including a reverse throwback to the quarterback – and pushed the ball into the end zone for a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.

It took Clemson’s offense until midway through the second quarter to mount any kind of a scoring threat, and they finally got on the scoreboard with a 28-yard field goal by Ammon LakipAmmon Lakip

that made it 7-3 Wake Forest with 8:49 left in the half.

The Tigers got a break on Wake’s ensuing possession – Clemson forced a 3-and-out to force a punt, but the snap on the punt was low and Alex Kinal dropped to one knee to field the snap. His gaffe gave the Tigers great field position at the Deacon 32-yard line.

Three plays later, the Tigers set up a perfect screen play and Stoudt’s pass to Wayne Gallman covered 18 yards for a touchdown that gave the Tigers a 10-7 lead with 7:00 remaining in the half. The reception was the first receiving touchdown of Gallman’s career.

The Tigers returned the special teams blunder favor following a Wake punt – Adam HumphriesAdam Humphries

muffed the punt and it was recovered by Wake at the Clemson 13-yard line. Two plays later, Wake’s John Wolford hit Cam Serigne on a 14-yard touchdown pass over the middle and the Deacs held a 14-10 lead with 4:31 left in the half.

Clemson responded with a drive that took all but the last 27 seconds off the clock, the drive ending when Stoudt hit Artavis Scott on a four-yard crossing route for a 17-14 Clemson lead. The Demon Deacons took over deep in their own territory, but a pass interference penalty extended the drive. Wake tried a Hail Mary to end the half – the pass was incomplete – but Tavaris BarnesTavaris Barnes

was called for a person foul and the Deacons got a career-long 50-yard field goal from Mike Weaver to tie the score at 17-17.

The Tigers took the opening drive of the second half and got a 39-yard field goal from Lakip for a 20-17 lead. The teams traded possessions through a rather punchless third quarter, but a 73-yard punt by Wake and questionable officiating gave Wake new life in the fourth quarter.

Early in the quarter, Clemson safety Robert Smith landed what looked like a legal hit on a Wake receiver but Smith was called for targeting and was ejected from the game. Wake turned the penalty yards into a field goal that made it 20-20 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game.

It took the Tigers just a few seconds to answer, however. Stoudt flipped a pass to Scott and Scott outran the defense down the right sideline to complete a 68-yard score and giving the Tigers a 27-20 lead with 10:53 remaining.

Clemson forced another Wake punt, and it took the Tigers nine plays to drive 72 yards to open up some breathing room. Gallman finished the drive with a 30-yard touchdown run that gave the Tigers a 34-20 lead with 6:36 remaining in the game.

Clemson plays at Georgia Tech next Saturday.
