Top Texas prospect close to making a decision, Tigers in final three

One of the top players in the state of Texas is close to making a decision and Clemson is in the final three.

Highly touted 4-star safety Andrew Mukuba (5-11 181) of Austin (TX) LBJ said Sunday night he has a top three of Clemson, LSU and Texas. Mukuba has not yet visited Clemson or LSU. He lives 15 minutes from the Texas campus so he’s made multiple trips there. He wants to make his decision before his season starts in September, so it’s not likely he’ll visit Clemson or LSU before that.

Mukuba has been in regular contact with Clemson recruiters Brent Venables and Mickey Conn, so he’s learned a lot about the program from those conversations as well as from what he’s seen on television and social media.

“They’ve just been solid for me,” Mukuba said. “They told me they’ve got everything planned out for me from when I get there. If a coach has got a plan for you, you got trust it and go with it. They are going to use me in multiple positions because I feel like I’m a really versatile defensive back. I can do it all in the secondary. They are just not going to lock me into one position. They are going to move me around everywhere on the field.”

Mukuba also has been impressed with Venables’ work with the Clemson defense.

“With what Coach Venables has been able to do with the defense at Clemson is unbelievable,” Mukuba said. “He’s one of the best defensive coordinators in college football. He’s really an open-minded guy. He knows what he’s doing with the defense. He’s been doing it so long, you really can’t go wrong with what he has been telling me.”

Mukuba has two excellent options outside of his hometown in Clemson and LSU, the teams that played for last year’s national champion. But Texas, despite the recent lack of major success, is still a big name in college football. And it is right down the street from Mukuba’s residence.

“It sounds good. It would be nice to be down the street from the school and be able to play for your hometown, that sounds good,” Mukuba said. “That’s not really my main focus, staying close to home. That would be nice but I’m open everywhere.”

And what is Mukuba focusing on in deciding on his school?

“The opportunity to make an impact early on as a true freshman, because I feel like I can really do that. I’m that type of player,” Mukuba said. “A good, consistent coaching staff. That’s important. Coaches switching is not healthy for a program. That’s something that I look into. And a place where it’s safe and and I can get an education and be developed as a person and as a player.”

Last season Mukuba had 26 tackles with 2 interceptions. He also plays receiver and caught 33 passes for 641 yards and 10 touchdowns. He’s rated as a four-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite and is ranked as the No. 12 safety nationally.
