Remember Who They Are
Nov 24, 2010, 11:48 AM
|
|
We are, unquestionably, a divided bunch this season. Ask a Clemson fan his or her opinion of this season, and you will get a variety of responses:
“Give Dabo more time. Remember how Danny Ford started.”
“Start Tajh Boyd. Kyle Parker must go. He doesn’t care anymore.”
“I like Dabo, but he’s got to clean house with his coaching staff.”
“Fire the whole lot of them. Terry Don, too. Let’s hire a real coach and win now.”
Clemson football and, as a result, our fan base, is in disarray right now. All of these opinions and issues, regardless which one you subscribe to, are worth addressing at the end of the season. Something is essentially wrong this year, and good, civil discussion about what that may be is certainly necessary. At the end of this season, although we may still be divided, we need to talk it over as a concerned fan base.
But this season isn’t over.
There is one more shade of evil on the horizon, and although it is a travesty that we are in this situation, that final game is all we have to play for. So while we will disagree and argue all day Saturday over our cold beverages and our barbecue, we cannot—no, we must not—forget where we stand when this unsavory group travels up from Columbia to visit our neighborhood.
I ask that you remember who they are.
Remember in 1992 how some #### fans broke into Death Valley and took a sledgehammer to the Rock.
Remember the boastful Internet posts about #### fans urinating or wiping boogers on the Rock.
Remember Pro Bowl Motors.
Remember the fight they started in 2004.
Remember the whiskey bottles thrown through Clemson fans’ car windows in Columbia.
Remember how they play “2001” as loud as possible twice a day in Columbia.
Remember how they list NIT championships as National Titles on their websites.
Remember how you can’t walk into Wal-Mart or McDonald’s wearing Clemson shirt without some random meth lab addict talking smack to you.
Remember the mullets.
Remember the car flags flying endlessly, even in July.
Remember the incessant and mindless yammering about the SEC.
Remember the little Gamecock kids who kick you in the shins on gameday while their parents laugh.
Remember them shaking Clemson cars on the roads in 1987. Remember how they always claim the SEC preseason championship.
Remember the random bumpkins who set up T-shirt stands on the highway after the College World Series.
Remember the middle fingers after every Clemson touchdown in Columbia.
Remember the middle fingers on the highway when they see your Clemson stickers on your car.
Remember how they wave the state flag and claim they are the representatives of our state.
Remember Gov. Hodges.
Remember Tanneyhill, Summers, Mitchell, the Lindsay twins, Watson, Pinkins, and Garcia.
Remember “Cockitude,” “#### n Fire,” and “Yard #####.”
Remember the filth who offered $1,000 for someone to break our kicker’s jaw.
Remember all those personal experiences you have had in Columbia and Clemson—and remember how those experiences were the few times we’ve lost.
There is a time to debate our problems and our future. That time begins Sunday morning. But more than ever, we need to refresh our memories and take them into the stands with us on Saturday. Our team needs us to remember. More importantly, every time the Gamecock offense steps on the field, they need to know that we remember.
So take those memories and cook them up on Saturday. Throw on a little ketchup-based, vinegar-based, or mustard-based sauce, whichever you prefer. Put them on a bun and put some beans on the side of your plate. Chew those memories up, swallow them, and wash them down with a little bit of bourbon. Let them sit in your stomach and then work their way back up to your voice box.
Then take them into Death Valley with you.
We don’t know if our football team will show up in full force on Saturday.
But by God, we sure as hell will.
Go Tigers.
P.S. I will not respond to any mindless Gamecock replies to this post… e So don’t waste your time.

in the division has over a .500 record in the conference and all of a sudden you are 'a new force' in college football. I mean, if you were somehow able to win the SEC you would have two WHOLE Conference Championships to your name. Ha! That gave me a good Thanksgiving day chuckle.

First off, Vanderbilt could not beat the likes of VT, Miami, NC State or even us for that matter. Period. Second, I never claimed that we have had anything to brag about lately but I'm not on my rivals message board talking smack. And third, if you want to be realistic okay - (like I said originally) the SEC East is down this year and you caught the rest of the division in rebuilding mode.
Not to mention, you haven't won back to back games in 40 years so what makes you so extremely confident you are going to win Saturday (especially by 21 points).

Our confidence comes from watching the Tigers play all year, and then watching us play. We always got to see Clemson play at noon (because you are a noon type of team for a regional viewing audience), and then we'd be on ESPN prime time watching our guys. It was pretty obvious who looked better most weeks. Does that mean anything come Saturday? Maybe not. But it is simple at this point.

Oh, you'll bite on this one. You were actually making a good post from a Clemson fan point of view until you mentioned the fight "we" started in 2004. You need to watch that film very closely and get back to me on who started the fight. It was your punk D lineman on our QB Newton. Don't let your emotions get into the way of reality though.

The actual "fight" was just the boiling point. The instigation started by the Coots before the game even started.

What a crock.....usuck players LED by your captain and one of the assistant coaches STARTED the entire situation by running over and taunting the Tigers as they ran down the hill....when your defense was running out onto the field after the unsuccessful 4th down play, it was one of the coot DL's who began the pushing and shoving which escalated quickly......no, under no circumstances would an unbiased observer come to any other conclusion and I sat there and watched the entire thing begin not 20 yards from where I was sitting---and have been sitting for years.
Regardless, the your team lost the fight and the game. To this day, I was very proud of the restraint showed by the Clemson student section and those fans on the hill when the fight spilled over to that area. I doubt that same restraint would have occurred had the game and ensuing scuffle taken place in Williams-Brice---and I've been there enough times to make that informed observation.

The gamecock thugs started the fight. It started off with your bush league antics at the bottom of the hill, then you clowns were chippy the whole game (like you were coached).
Your getting-their-ass-whipped thugs started the actual fisticuffs when the they ganged up on Bobby Williamson. When some Tigers came to the rescue, it was on.
You lost that fight (big time!), and the you got completely whipped in the game. It had to be embarrassing. I can understand why you'd want to twist it.
Happy Thanksgiving.
