This question was raised at lunch today.
It seems that Thomas Sumter, for whom the gamecocks mascot derives, was responsible for “Sumters law” in which slaves were offered to people that enlisted for 10 months during the Revolutionary War.

depending on which side of the story best suits their needs at the time.
When PETA was on their case, the school mascot was really named after Thomas Sumter, The Carolina Gamecock.
Now that a different group is on their case, the school mascot really was named after the bird and not the Revolutionary War general and politician.

The Rooster is a proud bird and a warrior. I will say that
he hates being with that team but they have him on a tether.
As far as other chickens, it would be tough not having them
to chow down on.

their University President needs to be forced to live in the slave quarters they have on campus. For public justice.
And not just for a little while til things blow over, but for the entire time he's there.

Gamecocks is the appropriate name. Thomas Sumter lost every battle he fought during the RW.

In regards to my love of history, the Great State of South Carolina, and Southern culture in general (please note, I didn't qualify one with another), I have to admit that it's actually a pretty cool mascot, certainly unique. The irony is it gives me something to hate with a passion, in spite of it all.
