Thank You UofSC, Thank You UGA, Thank You FLA

Aug 16, 2019, 5:03 PM

Seven years ago Mike Slive, Commissioner of the SEC, planned to expand the SEC to include 16 teams, adding Texas A&M, Missouri, Clemson, and FSU. It would have been a brilliant move by Slive and the crowning achievement of this tenure as commissioner, expanding the footprint of the SEC into Texas and Missouri and solidified SEC control of the Southeast. It would have essentially killed the ACC as a football conference. But ESPN announced the expansion prematurely and our friends at UofSC, UGA, and FLA blackballed the addition of Clemson and FSU. That led to all that crazy, desperate talk of Clemson joining the Big 12, which Coach Swinney rejected. UofSC fans, of course, were as giddy as schoolgirls thinking that they, along with their SEC compatriots, had put the final nail in the Clemson football program's coffin. They were so sure they would own the state of South Carolina forevermore and that Clemson would be relegate to the dust bin of history.

Fast forward seven years. Now after four straight CFP appearances, two national championships, and a No. 1 preseason ranking, the Clemson football program, thanks to Coach Swinney, has never been stronger or more relevant. So, let's enjoy the upcoming season and ride the Dabo train as far as it will take us. But, let's also tip our hats to our friends at UofSC, UGA, and FLA. Without them, we might be just another also-ran in the good, ole SEC.

It's very ironic that the same ones that complain about our schedule and an easy path to the playoffs, are the same ones that blocked us back then. Even now they would vote against us.

Well...some of that is actually true...

Others parts of it...no so much.

Mike Slive was planning to expand the SEC...

and those expansion plans included Texas A&M and Missouri.

That's about it !!!!

There were rumors that the SEC was interested in the possibility of adding Virginia and North Carolina schools (specifically Virginia Tech and North Carolina) largely because those were two states where the league did not already have a presence.

Ultimately, as we all know, no schools from the ACC joined the SEC. However, the threat of one or more of its members possibly joining the SEC led the ACC unanimously voting to raise its exit fee to $50 million.

Yeah. That seemed like an odd thing to post.

Why would we be "just an also ran in the SEC?"

Aug 16, 2019, 8:49 PM

Our recruiting would have probably been even better, being in the mighty SEC, so we probably have about six straight SEC East titles, and winning about every other SEC title game, going back and forth with Bama!

Would we have had to adopt their archaic brand of football as well ? I mean clearly the lets just grunt and brawn our way, three yards and a cloud of dust, run it off the center's left butt cheek, run it off the center's right butt cheek then do something really crazy like throw a screen pass isn't the ONLY way to win.

Thanks to the others who clarified some inaccuracies in the OP’s post. Sadly, rumors and the conjecture of others start to be taken as fact over time.

Clemson is right where we belong. Charter members of the ACC. We are not conference hoppers like others.

My only complaint is the ACC has expanded too much leading Clemson to have to play non-traditional rivals like Syracuse and Louisville each year. But, guess that’s no worse than playing Mizzou and A&M every year.

Here’s hoping for conference contraction at some point in the future. Bring back the Southwest Conference, Big 8 and the old ACC!
