I got paid $500 a month as a Grad Student at Clemson

and was very grateful. My tuition was reduced to about 1/3 the normal cost 3 or 4 hundred at the time. It covered my living expenses but I still had to work a little outside my University job. Grad students today expect a "living" wage. Times sure have changed. Heck most people have to pay there way for graduate school (I'm guessing, I don't know that).

Back in the day, I went to graduate school at night while working full time during the day. I paid my own tuition. It was tough financially and took much longer to finish, but it was worth it. Things certainly have changed!

Me too. Took 4 1/2 years to get my MBA while working full time as an HR Director. No stipend or graduate work study - paid full tuition myself. Kids today - hey, that’s my frisbee now, get outta my yard!!

I'm not defending these clowns.....but college has gotten beyond ridiculous in its costs. I graduated in 1995. We could afford to work our way through school then. All in...it was about $6500 a year. That price now is north of $25,000.

The only problem was that my RA sponsor did not want me to work a second job. He could not make me not get a second job, but he made it clear what his expectations were. It was a struggle and I ended up having to get student loans to make up the difference.
Still grateful for the RA. The reduced tuition was huge.

First year masters was 250 a month - yup my rent at UV (dating myself) was $340 for a single room. Second year masters was $600 per month. PhD was about $1400. All before taxes.
And no, you couldn't pick up a second gig. Classes were MWF 8am-645pm (labs were 245-645). Assistantship was about 15 hours T/TH and taking 13 credit hours and a full schedule meant nights and weekends were for homework. Many night you just slept in the lab on Friday and worked Saturdays in the fall.
Tuition/fees etc was about $1,500 a semester. I think health insurance was 660/y and outside of the health center was costly. A Mt biking accident in the experimental forest near Issaqueena cost me nearly $8K with insurance.
Most of my debt from loving expense and that one summer where the tuition waiver did not apply for out-of-state but enrollment was required. Sneak and horrible practice that one as it was not disclosed upfront. It just happened that a required class was not offered during the spring/fall and everyone's assistantship was 9 months. I want to say that those three credits cost about $9K.

Note, the PhD work requirement was beween 20-40 hours a week... often more. Since you normally paired your funding with your dissertation advisor, you could never say "no". I got luck with a good Prof, but you could literally have a prof assign 60 hours of work/research requirement and no time for dissertation work since that is always considered "on your own time".
The guy who "built" the Civil research van basically was tasked with that and wasn't really allowed to do any real classwork. Never finished. Many t folks not finishing was the result of faculty abuse of "free-ish" or discounted labor than anything knowledge based.

Poop her, put your graduate classes on hold, get a real job, save your money by cancelling trips to the beach, and weekend night clubbing, and daily stops by her favorite water hole for BS conversations.
For 2 solid years, I went to school full time starting at 8 am till 2pm 5 days a week. I went to work at 3 pm to 11pm 5 days a week, and I worked on Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm. I put in 35 hours a week in school, and 44 hours a week at work to support myself so I could go to school. Nothing is free if you grew up in a poor family, and I've had to work long hours all my life to make sure I was never as poor as my mom that raised 6 kids from SSI check from my dads death when I was only 9 years old. I have some good advice for Jennifer Standish, work more and complain less, and stop asking for part of what somebody else is earning, she will appreciate more later in life!!!

allin, I don't disagree with your sentiment but more about the reality of what modern graduate students face - actually what a lot of young professionals face.
It does not work that way at the graduate level for a LOT of grad programs tied to an assistantship with work requirements. Even now, most entry level jobs hardly cover the cost of living, let alone the cost of tuition on top of that. Nor can you really complain since your funding is tied to the prof. Thus they can fail you in the "class" for not meeting research targets relating to your work. It is called the defense or quals. I saw it happen at Clemson and Clemson did not even have a bad rap for it compared to other schools.
My CLEMSON stipend for my first-year in the masters program didn't cover my rent - a single room, let alone anything else. And that is at Clemson where rent is cheap. I bet $7500 or whatever might not cover rent in Chapel Hole.
And if I "only" spent 35 hours on school, I would not have graduated. Essence of Decision takes at least 35 hours of reading and I was given 3 days just for one class. At the end, my school work took 80+ hours of grind to finish that least "credit" for the phd.
Any graduate student that even thinks of acting like an 3.0 gpa undergrad won't make it through their first semester. Completely different workload.

Every school has its share of Grad school Communists on its campus. Admittedly, UNC probably has more than its fair share however.

Like many of us, I worked full time and took MBA classes at night. I paid as I went, some semesters I could afford 2 classes, some only 1.
Had a roommate in a very small, very old house. Our TV was his parents old black & white for sound and my parents old black and white for picture, and yes both had to be tuned with pliers.
No AC. We kept the heat very low, when friends would come over they would leave their winter coats on. We eventually got use to it.
Many Saturday mornings my roommate would make his famous breakfast of popcorn with popcorn gravy. The gravy was the extra oil, not butter.
I'm not special, I don't deserve a medal, I don't even deserve a participation award. I did what countless others did. I did what it took. They can do the same.
You don't have to live in chapel hill to get a masters. You chose to.
As old blue eyes sang, if you can't make it here, you can't make it anywhere.
Old man rant over, thank you for tuning in.

MBA are bit of a different creature. Their framework isn't common for most other fields.
To other programs, the joke is that most MBA issue degrees if your check clears... because "business". Not saying that an MBA can't be rigorous - part of my work was in Sirrine - but it is often much more flexible compared to other sciences.
My masters program did not offer night course. Classes were MWF from 8am til 2:45. And then lab from 2:45-6:45. There was no part-time option, at least until getting past 35 of the 52 required credits. To get the tuition waiver, you when you weren't in class (T/TH) and were full time working for homework/papers/labs on weekends.
Oh, and my field basically requires a masters degree and PhDs are more common than those with only a bachelors. Really you have to be 60+ to be working with only a bs (not required but expected 30 years ago), as anyone under 40 with only a bs would not be hired. Period.

You probably can not find a hand blister in that whole group. They need operating instructions on how to use a shovel and a rake. Tuition for the spring semester at Clemson in 1974 was 868 dollars.

What? You might be surprised with most graduate students, heck you seek out manual labor just to provide a mental break if you had one. I worked construction installing concrete ponds before going into my field. Many could at least change a timing belt of their non-interference Subaru. Heck, my research office designed and built a portable and collapsible outdoor table that seats 12 and could be folded up (with benches) inside a prius. I don't drive a prius but they use that as the metric. Then again, engineers will engineer.

They signed up for graduate school knowing what it entails. If they don’t like it, they should drop out to make room for someone who wants to be there and truly values the opportunity.

I googled whether the Heels mascot is supposed to be a sheep or a goat and found that "Rameses" is a Dorset Horned Sheep.
"People also ask Are sheep better than goats?
Are sheep more profitable than goats?
Is a sheep and goat the same thing?
Is a female goat a sheep?"
Wow! Just wow!
