Building pinewood derby cars

Jan 25, 2021, 12:38 PM

10 dads (and kids) got together this weekend to work on pinewood derby cars. It felt good to play with power tools, create some sawdust, hang out in a group (outside with our masks on), bond with kiddos a bit while they watched us do most of the work.

Almost felt normal again except no beer was allowed. No homeux.

She's pretty knowledgeable when it comes to cars, I hear.

She was glad I had the boys out of the house

Pretty sure she took a nap or enjoyed the private time.

From a back to back pinewood derby winner, two hints:

Make sure the car weighs EXACTLY the maximum allowable weight

Graphite on the axles

There are a billion more recommendations now

Weight so center balance is 1" in front of rear wheels.
Cut out a bunch of weight from car body and add to the back.
Ride on 3 wheels.
Angle back wheels out.
Bend front axle to rail ride.
Polish the fool out of the axles.
Sand car where wheel rubs and apply graphite.
Lengthen the wheel base.

We have the weight about perfect, and spent time polishing axles. Will liberally apply graphite, and hope it runs straight.
