Thoughts on the country...

Jan 8, 2021, 10:03 PM

I think the attacks on Trump and 'Walmart' deplorable republicans by Biden and Democrats yesterday and today are hyperbolic political cheap shots that only divide the country even more, and are very dangerous. 74 million Americans are ticked off, rightly or wrongly. Biden must extend an olive branch immediately. I hope he's up to it. However, I believe his handlers, who I think call the shots and control him, want to hatefully punish Trump and utterly destroy him.

Enough is enough. Just my two cents.

people don't think that the election was stolen, or that Wed was some kind of "Bunker Hill patriot moment", or any of that nonsense. Oh no. I have some friends that voted for Trump, and they held their nose while doing so, and the only reason was this: they're either retired or approaching retirement, and thought the status quo would keep their 401Ks safe for a couple more years.

That's it, period.

Jan 9, 2021, 7:28 AM

I voted for Trump in '16 and supported him despite his idiocy until it was clear he could not lead during COVID and the race riots. From March 2020 on he proved finally to be beyond defending. And now I consider him a traitor who should be put on trial. But. BUT. He did great with the economy and national defense. He told it like it is about SO MANY of the ###### up things that have the average American angry. We kowtow to countries that wouldn't exist if not for us. We've sold out our own people in the name of corporate profits. And our political system is so rigged you can't even begin to speak truth UNLESS you're a billionaire like Trump and don't need the PAC money.

Then at the end of the day, if you have a 401K you're counting on for a decent retirement, you logically can't vote for the party that will take it away or sizably shrink it. That is ###### up. All of us, who are lucky enough to have 401Ks, focus on that very vulnerable nest egg for a big part of the political decisions we make.

Meanwhile, the uber rich who don't need 401Ks and the underclass who don't have them, have formed an alliance in the Democrat party to force their agenda on the rest of us.

Bottom line - if we as a country don't get our act together and make serious reforms this will only get worse. I am not joking and never have been about the possibility of Civil War. It is very, VERY real.

Jan 9, 2021, 7:36 AM

You’re voting for your own self interest. That’s human instinct #1, survival, and it is no harder to fathom you voting to keep more of what you’ve worked for than it is someone who didn’t save and invest voting for the politician who promises the most govt-provided aid to cover that shortfall. I may not like the choices that some have made to put themselves in that position, but I surely understand why they vote how they do once they’re there.

It’s like the old fable about the ant and the grasshopper. They’re going to vote for very different candidates.

The only times my 401k took a serious hit were during Dubya's and Trump's presidencies, so when can we stop pretending that Democratic presidents ruin stock prices?

Let's remind ourselves how the Dow Jones more than doubled under evil socialist Obama.

Returns are one variable that impacts portfolio value

Jan 9, 2021, 8:03 AM

Amounts invested on the front end are another, and the gains my small business made (and the amounts I’ve been able to invest beyond IRS 401k maximums) during the past 4 years were quite real and very much connected to tax changes.

There have also been some regulation and rule changes that made my life a lot easier as a business owner. I’m hoping Biden doesn’t take us back to where we were as these things impact me quite closely, but my hopes aren’t high.

Obed

That observation about voting self-interests is quite astute, although there is also a lot of voting against self interest. I read a book - What is the matter with Kansas awhile back that was very interesting. You might check it out.

I would like to make an additional point. A significant % of Americans never obtain the wherewithal to establi8sh 401Ks or other means of investing in their future. Plenty of Americans are struggling just to make ends meet week to week. What do we do about them ? Just kick them to the curb? Sometimes that seems to be the attitude of some Republicans.

Paw man

You claimed that: "Meanwhile, the uber rich who don't need 401Ks and the underclass who don't have them, have formed an alliance in the Democrat party to force their agenda on the rest of us."

I do not understand why you think that the Dems are the party protecting the uber-rich. The Dems certainly do rely on the rich's campaign donations as much as the Reps, but they seem far more willing to address income inequity in our country than do the Reps. The Dems are calling for taxing the uber-rich more, and regulating Wall Street more, and helping the working class struggling through this virus more.

So I am not seeing where they are the party of the uber-riuch. That seems to be the MO of the Reps more. Can you enlighten me here ?

Anecdotal alert

Jan 9, 2021, 10:44 AM

I’ve had many Democrat friends over the years, and I won’t paint them all this way, but I had a few acquaintances who did well for themselves ($350k+ annually) and were hard left on social issues. If you got them drinking enough, the conversations would reveal that the root of their magnanimity was that a) their seat at society’s table was a done deal, and an expanding govt dependent class kept a nice tidy line between “us and them”, and b) they could afford to pay a little more to Uncle Sam to have this guaranteed class structure.

Obviously it’s a small sample size, but I believe this mindset often extends upwards to the truly wealthy on the left. They’re all for the underprivileged, as long as they don’t move to their backyard.

Is there elitism in the Republican Party too? Oh sure, but I still believe that the odds of someone coming from little and rising to a lot are better under conservative economic conditions than liberal ones. Of course that last statement is hypothetical here in 2021 as both parties seem to be in a populist freebie race.

Jan 9, 2021, 9:58 AM [ in reply to That’s me! It’s all about the portfolio! ??*** ]

Bengal,

I get that the portfolio is important. I am retired and counting on my 401 to see me through. But I cannot expect (& would not vote for) a politician who was only concerned about me and people like me. Any leader has to be concerned for ALL of the people they claim to lead. In fact, people with retirement accounts are better off than about 45% of other Americans.

There is a succinct chart about a page down this article:
https://news.gallup.com/poll/266807/percentage-americans-owns-stock.aspx

Here is the other thing. Conservatives seem to think that Democrats are poison to the economy. That is demonstrably NOT true. The attached chart show % of GDP growth by Presidential term.

And I think politicians should be more concerned about the economy overall, and job & income growth than about the stock market. My feeling is that if they take care of the economy as a whole, the stock market will be pretty good, too.

Re: Thoughts on the country...

Jan 9, 2021, 12:08 AM

I don’t know any reasonable person who doesn’t want some sort of reconciliation and healing...I know I do...but not before there has been a reckoning.

What happened Wednesday cannot simply be excused or forgotten. Months/years of inflammatory rhetoric and lies finally came to a head. The actual sitting President of the United States set the stage for insurrection, sat back in joy as people were storming The Capitol...as people were dying.

The media can certainly be a hype machine at times, but I don’t think it’s remotely possible to be too hyperbolic about what happened. I hope Trump and those rioters that can be identified are tried and punished so severely that no one ever dare to try anything like it again.

I do actually agree it’s unfair to label everyone who voted for Trump as deplorable. Some voted for him purely out of self-interest and I get that to some degree. However, anyone who is still a supporter today, is not only deplorable but irredeemable as well.

Re: Thoughts on the country...

BTM

I agree that more important problem facing America is some sort of return to real and meaningful conversation. The type of exchange that can lead to common ground and compromise going forward. These things have always led to the best possible results for Americans. Perhaps as the virus threat lifts we can go back to real human interactions and a consideration of each other as human beings. Social media is often more divisive that instructive.

I have seen the word deplorables a couple of times this morning and I think that it has been used and heard too broadly. We tend to lump people together too often and in far too large a group.

Some small % of conservatives have deplorable ideas. If you think t6hat people of color or women are inferior to you simply because of those characteristics - I find that deplorable (& misguided).

If you think that all poor people are lazy or stupid and deserve what they get - I find that deplorable (& misguided).

If you think someone is evil or un-American because they see things differently than you - I find that deplorable (& misguided).

BTM - I agree that there need to be a reconciliation among Americans (& humans), but that reconciliation has to be based upon empirical evidence and rational thinking.

Some people on these boards have pointed out that 75 million Trump voters are pissedoff about something and that as Americans their concerns should be addressed. I agree that Americans should be paid heed to - that is what democracy is all about.

BUT, those concerns HAVE to be based in reality - they have to be able to be expr4essed in evidence and facts. The nation cannot be asked to be swayed based on intuition or suspicion or speculation.

And if Americans cannot come to some agreement about what is real and factual, well then democracy ceases to be a viable option for human beings any longer.

Jan 9, 2021, 10:48 AM

Most of the people who voted for Trump are not angry, traitorous goons with civil war on the brain. That's a small segment of his base.

The majority of people who voted for Trump are still normal Americans who love this country.
