Clemson Grad & Mount Pleasant Mayor on Masks

Sep 2, 2020, 1:48 PM

Will Haynie - he spoke on the mask ordinance for the Town of Mount Pleasant. The mask ordinance failed in a 5-4 vote, which required at least six votes. The whole debate kind of illustrates where we are as a country. There is an open rebellion against the overwhelming advice of the medical community.

What stood out to me from his argument was the quote of Dr. David McSwain from MUSC about cause of death vis-a-vis COVID19.

In general, the impression from this meeting is that half of Town Council has little to no respect for general medical opinions of people from MUSC (aka "the experts) and that people are plain tired of the mask-nazis.

I hate the mask nazis as much as anyone, but the defiant response to trusted medical experts is quite unsettling to see.

I love how cases drop in cities where they implement masks, including Mount Pleasant and the Charleston area... we actually see it starting to work after what, two months?

And then just as we're starting to get better--bam! "Muh freedom! No more masks!"

Regardless, the Lowe's in Town Centre will still be the 7th Circle of Hell.

what's the end game?

Sep 2, 2020, 2:17 PM [ in reply to Re: Clemson Grad & Mount Pleasant Mayor on Masks ]

if we wore masks from here until eternity there are a BUNCH of viruses that we can minimize from spreading. Our regularly scheduled flu season would be great.........where do we stop? Masks don't "STOP" the spread, it delays the inevitable for when the "mask wearing" is finished............which is WHEN?????? November 3rd??? 5 years??? 10 years???NEVER?? don't say until a vaccine b/c A. the "initial" narrative was to "slow the spread" so med facilities weren't over run prior to getting equipped (so the goalposts once again are being moved). B. not everybody's gonna get one & C. even they are not 100% effective.....just look at the regular flu.

I agree we need to focus on objectives

I always looked at the rate of Covid deaths per 100,000 as the baseline measure that we should be working to address instead of hospitalization rate.

We have lost almost 185,000 people to Covid-19. That number is a 9-11 attack every day for two months. It is flying a full 737 airplane into a mountain every single day for more than two years. H/T Heather Cox Richardson.

Maybe when we get the covid death rate down to the "it's just the flu" rate, we can relax with the masks? During the 2018/19 flu season, that total was 34,000 deaths.

During the 1918 influenza pandemic, the first wave of illness came in the spring but was relatively modest. It was the second wave that arrived in fall 1918 that was catastrophic and caused tens of millions of deaths around the world.

If it is possible we are just getting started, maybe the best course of action is to be even more vigilant now.

I wish people could be slightly more patient

we all want this to be over with, but we need to be more vigilant now, get the numbers down as low as possible before we get to November & December when this thing could possibly break-out more severely.

We didn't run out of ventilators, IC beds or space...

Sep 2, 2020, 2:05 PM

we didn't die at the 1% death rate promised and 20% of our population hasn't been infected giving us 1-2 million dead. Have you asked yourself how America was that successful or whether the 'medical professional scientist,' just blew smoke up our shorts?

Either Trump has done one heck of an outstanding job or you and I were victims of some horrible deceit. Are you saying that the best is yet to come?

The democrats' deceit has no borders.

Sep 2, 2020, 3:07 PM

Over half the people on Earth are required to wear masks now. It's amazing how far the ruse has gone just to get Trump out of office. The left-wing libs seem to be especially influential in Africa, India, South Asian countries, and parts of South America.

Of the 15 who report wearing more mask than the US how much confidence do you put in the testing capability and accuracy of their numbers?
