Wrestlin' story

Apr 14, 2014, 3:33 PM

About 20 years ago, when I was working at WSPA, we had the UWF (Universal Wrestling Federation) call us to record an event in the Spartanburg Auditorium that they would cut up and make into TV shows. I got to run one of the ringside cameras. Before the event, we pretaped several of the wrestlers and the promoter for situations that would happen later in the ring including the promoter in tattered clothes and "blood". We taped about 15 different bouts that night with each wrestler doing 3 bouts each. We had the Boogie Woogie Man (nice guy who brought his grandson with him), the Undertaker, Ivan Koloff and several more. Before each bout, the director would tell us what was going to happen in that bout so that we would be ready for it. We even had one time when, after the wrestler had been thrown out of the ring and we were shooting him on the floor, the director was telling us not to get too tight on him because he had forgotten the blood capsules. The "EMS" guys came out the look at him and suddenly there was "blood" everywhere.

It was amazing to me the number of people in the audience that were going nuts over these bouts, truly thinking they were "real". On a side note, they never paid us and soon went out of business.

Capsules? They didn't juice? Dusty Rhodes used to juice hard

Apr 14, 2014, 3:54 PM

That's why his forehead looks like a bad case of road rash.

Used to tuck a small bit of a razor blade in the wrist tape and run it across the head lightly to generate blood. Rarely heard of guys using capsules.

Nah. Juicing means to cut yourself for blood.

Apr 14, 2014, 4:03 PM [ in reply to I think he abused gravy more than steroids.*** ]

As opposed to capsules or other fake blood. Juicing the hard way is like Mick Foley getting busted open from unprotected chair shots and other spots.
