I love Mobile.

It is very much like Charleston. Huge historic district, but not as museum-like as charleston. If you can get a room there, the Battle House is a beautifully-restored historic hotel downtown. It is an easy walk thru downtown and the historic district.
If you want a beer at a great local dive, the Garage is a terrific spot. It is just off Dauphin Street, Mobile's Bourbon Street equivalent, which is also within walking distance.
As for dining, I'm a bit rusty. My family used to visit Mobile in the 1960's and we would always eat at Wentzel's Oyster Bar. It is still there, although a bit more touristy than back in the day.

It's not Mobile, but if you are getting that close then you might consider Dauphin Island on the coast. That time of the year, places are dirt cheap and it is a nice little community.

Do not stay in Mobile. Stay on the Easternshore in either Daphne, Spanish Fort or Fairhope. Beautiful little bay towns with newer hotels. The food in downtown Fairhope is excellent.

I am staying in Mobile this weekend at the Renaissance. Nice hotel. However, Surprised how disappointing Mobile is compared to what I expected. Quite a few empty storefronts and seems depressed. Fairhope, however, is well worth a visit. Charming shops, restaurants, homes and views.
