New Texans GM wants to build around Deshaun Watson

Now that new Texans general manager Brian Gaine has taken over the personnel department, he's intent on building a strong complement of players around Deshaun Watson.Browse through the photos to see the Texans' new general manager being introduced.

In multidimensional quarterback Deshaun Watson, the Texans have one of the most dynamic young offensive players in the NFL.

Now that new Texans general manager Brian Gaine has taken over the personnel department, he's intent on building a strong complement of players around the former Clemson star.

"He's certainly a foundational piece for us in terms of what we can build around," Gaine said. "It certainly would be an advantage for any general manager coming into a team to have a quarterback in place that you believe in, that you know that can help you win football games."

Before he injured his knee when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in practice, Watson was on pace to finish the season with 43 touchdown passes. He passed for 19 touchdowns and finished the season with 21 total touchdowns.

The Texans need to fortify their threadbare offensive line and find more explosive weapons that can work in tandem with Pro Bowl wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins.

"When you have a quarterback in place that you believe in, that you think can help you win a lot of football games, you've got to start to put pieces around him and pieces in place to help him succeed on the field," Gaine said. "And that's not just with the perimeter players and the skill players, that will be with the offensive line. So it's certainly an area that we're going to evaluate heavily here."

I can’t imagine anyone arguing with that logic.

What round did Todd McShay say?

If you want to see the impact Watson has on a team.

Look at Will Fuller's #'s

With Deshaun Watson:
4 GP, 7 Rec. TD, 17 Fantasy Points Avg., 22 targets, 13 receptions

Without Deshaun Watson:

6 GP, 0 Rec. TD, 2 Fantasy Points Avg. 28 targets, 15 receptions

The reason you're looking here is that he's the #2 Receiver on the Texans - As the #1, DeAndre Hopkins is going to see the majority of the targets, but let's look at his numbers with and without Deshaun as well:

With Deshaun Watson:

7.5 GP - 7 Rec. TD, 14.6 Fantasy Points Avg, 60 Targets, 38 Receptions
(Bear in mind these numbers are brought down by the game vs. CLE, where he was limited, and only had 4 targets)

Without Deshaun Watson:

8.5 GP - 6 Rec. TD, 13.5 Fatnasy Points avg. 99 Targets, 51 Receptions

Both Fuller and Hopkins are better with Watson as QB. Hopkins marginally, Fuller dramatically. This is brought about by Watson's ability to extend plays, make additional reads, and better throws on the run that are practically impossible for less mobile QBs (cough, Tom Savage, cough) to make. When you look at those numbers, it's nearly impossible to NOT build a team around Deshaun Watson, as he's a multiplier - he makes everybody around him better statistically.

But everybody here already knew that.

Nuk starts are only comparible becasue without DW4, they have no choice but to feed the ball to there only real playmaker. Look at the yardage and TD per target and his number freefell

...better start with an O-line******
