Tire pressure kweshion

Feb 2, 2021, 10:11 AM

If I inflate my tires at the proper 35psi at sea level, then proceed to drive cross country where I will climb several 10k foot passes, will it be necessary to let some air out at the higher elevations?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Think of driving up mountains like driving on the beach

Feb 2, 2021, 10:14 AM

You want to be around 22 PSI

If you're having to ask,

Feb 2, 2021, 10:14 AM

you can't afford it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, you should let all the air out of your tires climbing

the Rockies.

Personally, I think it's a weak move not overinflating your tires. I always put mine at like 37 so I have air to spair. Makes your tires look bigger too. Kinda like how you squeeze ur bonar to make your fleshstick look bigger when you're showing it off.

Yes, in fact I would recomend for best results you stop and

check your tire pressure every 5 miles or so to make sure your trip is as efficient as possible. This is how they do it for the cannonball run.

Also take lots of pictures.

Let's keep it real, mane

if it's not TOTE1 taking the picture, does it really count ?

Excellent point. Watercolor paintings would be nice though.***

Would it not make more sense for him to stop and check them

during elevation changes? Say, every 100' to 150'?

Sure, if you want to be super risky. A safe driver would

also monitor air and road temperature to watch out for any 4 or 5 degree spikes that may throw the whole plan into disarray.

Stiff competition this morning. I might win it with this.

The below is a discussion, complete with graphs, of psi vs psia vs pisg. Pissie, pizza and pigs, we call it, as you know from frequent lunge use.

What is relevant to you is that pizza at sea level is about 14 and a half pounds, and about 10 pounds at 10,000 feet.

Feb 2, 2021, 10:35 AM

He needs to blow his tires up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I thought that's what that plainly said. Inflate now.

I dunno. I do know though that if you keep your tires

Feb 2, 2021, 11:06 AM

pumped to the recommended pressure, they always eventually wear on the sides. I keep mine about 2-3 PSI above what's in the door. Tires wear more evenly, buys me prolly 5-10K miles.

Since my latest vehicle has the constant tire pressure reading it has been enlightening to see how the pressure changes during a short drive down the road. It will rise an average of 3-4 lbs in a 10 mile romp down the interstate. Even the sun shining on one side will have 1 or 2 lb difference. difference between 30 vs 80 degree day is 3-4+ lbs. Pulling a trailer will add a few pounds to rear, etc. Ain't technology wunnerful!?

Whatever happened to the nitrogen inflating craze?

Feb 2, 2021, 11:34 AM

Until they have that in gas stations, it's useless to have to go to a dealer, tire shop, etc. to top off your pressure.
