COVID-19 mortality rate by the top 10 infected countries

Got these numbers from the Johns Hopkins tracker - snapshot in time so these numbers will change:
China: 81,020 infections; 3217 deaths = 3.9% mortality rate Italy: 24,747 infections; 1809 deaths = 7.3% mortality rate Iran: 13,938 infections; 724 deaths = 5.1% mortality rate South Korea: 8,236 infections; 75 deaths = 0.9% mortality rate Spain: 7,845 infections; 292 deaths = 3.7% mortality rate Germany: 5,813 infections; 13 deaths = 0.2% mortality rate France: 5,437 infections; 127 deaths = 2.3% mortality rate USA: 3,774 infections; 69 deaths = 1.8% mortality rate Switzerland: 2,217 infections: 14 deaths = 0.6% mortality rate Japan: 1,535 infections; 31 deaths = 2.0% mortality rate
The mortality rate of this thing seems to be all over the place ranging from just 0.2% in Germany to 7.3% in Italy. Scientists are going to be digging through this COVID-19 data for years trying to make sense of it all...

thanks for sharing.
It would be interesting to see breakouts of death by age ranges, as I imagine that could account for some of the variance in the death rate percentages. Italy's population is relatively older than some other countries, but I'm curious how South Korea has a 0.9% mortality rate (for example).

I am not a doctor or immunologist or involved in health care in any way, but I would imagine that Italy's mortality rate has a lot to do with the age of their population.
If you look at Italy's population demographics:
https://www.indexmundi.com/italy/age_structure.htmlFacts and statistics about the Age structure of Italy. Updated as of 2019. Facts and statistics about the Age structure of Italy. Updated as of 2019.
vs the US:
https://www.indexmundi.com/united_states/age_structure.htmlFacts and statistics about the Age structure of United States. Updated as of 2019. Facts and statistics about the Age structure of United States. Updated as of 2019.
A larger percentage of the population in the age danger zone is going to lead to a higher mortality rate.
Just my uneducated opinion.

Is because they are only counting those who die strictly from the virus and not counting thus who die from it plus other diseases or complications.

Look at the China numbers for all areas outside of Hubei.

I'm not sure we'll ever know the real denominator

given that the symptoms can be almost negligible for children and the younger healthy population. And I'm pretty sure how aggressively testing is performed is going to have a lot to do with the mortality rate. Fewer documented cases will yield a higher mortality rate.
S. Korea where there has been aggressive testing and a lot of documented cases (higher sample size) is probably the closest to reality.

The South Korea mortality rate is 0.9%., or 9X as deadly as influenza. Yet it is MORE infectious than Influenza by that same data.

the countries with the lowest mortality rates are the countries who have tested the most people. Lower data populations always include those who dies 'with' the virus. This skews the numbers terribly. This is why you can't just listen tot he blabber and freak out!

I think as we get more data, the numbers will begin to converge somewhat.

Not sure how accurate any of these are. I was listening to a Dr. that is working closely with the CDC state that 80% of all people that have the virus have no to very little symptoms. Thus most of those will not be going to the Dr.'s office to be tested. My Dr. stated that the requirements for someone being tested is so different that most that go to their Dr.'s are being treated for the Flu and sent home.
