It's more a competition than a sport, like checkers...

Good God that is the weakest field I have seen in 20+ years.
Guess that's what happens when the likes of Chile, Italy, Netherlands, USA, Ivory Coast, and Ghana somehow don't qualify for the thing. Two of Europe's big powers, the USA, the winner of the last two Copa Americas, and the top two teams in Africa - gone.
Nothing remotely resembling a Group of Death. You can pretty much pencil out the bottom two teams from each bracket and fill in your bracket blind, like, right now.
And I am fully prepared to believe the Russians monkeyed with the USA election, if they can somehow engineer a draw like that. Are you kidding me? Uruguay, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, the latter two of which have almost zero prior World Cup experience? Uruguay is shockingly good for a country of 3 million, but their depth is nonexistent, and the Gremlins from the Kremlin must have figured it was a trivial matter to hamstring one of them, or to goad Luis Suarez into biting someone again.
Uruguay: A formidable team, when this man is not disqualified for biting his opponents.

Egypt could win it just on the strength of Mo Salah alone

There is just no way that is legit.
I'm just shaking my head. FIFA (and Russia) are blatantly stacking the deck in full view of the world and daring anyone to do something about it.
Only question is, how'd they manage it? The old hot-or-cold ball trick FIFA always favored, or did the Russkies get creative this time?

Well the host always gets a beneficial draw

Getting the top seed in group A every time. In 2010 South Africa probably didn't even have a good enough team to qualify and was given a decent draw. It'll be even worse next time in 2022 with a bad Qatar team.
It is bizarre though

Would be absolutely hilarious if the Russkies still somehow found a way to not get through.
Uruguay will probably handle them, regardless of how much damage the Gremlins from the Kremlin do. Russia has been in some bad form of late - they crashed out of the Euros after two games and looked horrifyingly bad doing it, and their fans were even more embarrassing than South Carolina's, were going around the streets of France in packs punching random supporters from other teams in the face. FIFA should have pulled their World Cup right there, but, you know...well, FIFA.
God only knows what they'll do to the officiating, though.
Some ways I'm just as glad the USA is out of it this time around. With the political climate, the thing being held in Russia...I just didn't see that ending well for us, in any way. Of course, the one after that's in Qatar, which hardly seems better....
