Although it is true there would be no Clemson Univ
without Tillman or Calhoun. It is also true that they were
negative about blacks in America

If the names on the building and honor college offend a
large segment of the student population why would you argue for keeping them.
It does not diminish the greatness of Clemson as a school and a family.
But it can make a large portion of our school feel more respected if renamed.

I'll give you on adage and one quote to illustrate

Sticks and stones can break my bones, but names will never hurt me

and

Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet? William Shakespeare

If they rename it or not, I'll still love CU.

Most reasonable series of comments I’ve seen on here recently.

As a Clemson alum I can support renaming Calhoun honors college as requested.

Beyond that we are re-writing history and too much of re-writing of history has gone on in history books already. I am sorry people are offended by names when they don't understand the truth and all the facts of history. It offends me when people want to tear down Confederate memorials and say the battle flag only represents hate. Do they advocate tearing down revolutionary statutes and WWII statues when slavery and racism was sanctioned? More slaves were sanctioned under old glory variants than the Confederate battle flag(which was a battle flag for people who never owned slaves defending their homeland). The largest KKK rally ever held was under the US flag. Do you support changing the US flag because bad things were done under the flag. You don't think that offended people. Since you have done some bad things in life then change your name as you have offended people. Re-write history Rose.

No one wants to rewrite history...just cease to celebrate those who otherwise were despicable humans in their time, or any time.

As far as all things confederate, this is one that hits home for me as a native southerner whose GGGF fought for the confederacy. However, in what universe do the traitorous losers of a war get to erect monuments to their so called ‘lost cause’? There was nothing noble or just about that cause/war and even though I’m sure my GGGF may have thought he was ‘defending his homeland’, it’s just not true. Does moving all those monument to museums or private owners make me sad? Sure, a little...but it’s the right thing to do and now is the right time to do it. Hell, it should have been done years ago, but too many still hang on to some romanticized notion of a great fight against tyranny and oppression...which sounds great and all, but rings hollow once you realize the real price paid by so many.

Let’s remember Tillman and Calhoun for the good they did, but let’s not celebrate or honor them for the evil things they did either. Time to relegate them to history where they belong.

Fluor did not hire me out of Clemson and this offends me. Granted my GPA wasn’t the best but that is neither here nor there. I would like to officially start a petition to change the name of Fluor (despite them giving a lot of money) bc they offend me. Anyone with any suggestions?

So? Without Hitler there would be no Volkswagen. Some bad people still don't deserve to be honored. It's not needed anyway. They are just buildings. Odd that people even want to hold on to a name of an individual on a building like it is important. Weren't the buildings originally other names anyway?

Tillman yes, Calhoun no.

Still Clemson was the product of Clemson.

My thoughts exactly

Jun 11, 2020, 11:53 AM

But if eliminating both names achieves the greater good for the University as a whole, then so be it.

Without Stalin, there would be no skyscrapers in Moscow.

Without Bin Laden, there would be no 911 Memorial.
