Football announcer pet peeves

Sep 3, 2017, 10:35 PM

When they wet themselves over a QB "smartly" throwing the ball away and go crazy complimenting him over it.

What are some of yours?

I thought you were picking on Tucker Carlson, which is something I strongly encourage.

When they say "just shy of the first down."

Sep 3, 2017, 10:50 PM

It should be just SHORT of the first down. Shy is a personality trait, and does not relate to distance.

My pet peeve is very simple: Beth Mowins. Her voice is somewhere between a rusty knife on a dirty chalkboard and a sick baby screaming on an Allegiant fight.

Can you name a female football announcer with an acceptable voice? I can't other than
Sam Pond. Sam's replacement doesn't cut it.

When they have a lisp and spit all over the screen.

Sep 3, 2017, 11:02 PM

Actually bad producers annoy me a lot more.

The VT and FSU games had WAY too much crowd noise piped in and they were VERY slow or lacking with replays. IMO all good producers should lean heavily on replays that give a better view and announcers to talk about nuances of the game.

Funny topic - definitely agree with the original post.

Another similar one is when announcers try to sound so smart by reminding the viewer when a QB is flagged for intentional grounding - it's also a loss of down. Typically, intentional grounding is an incomplete pass, which is a loss of down. I don't need a former player, or any announcer for that matter, to remind me of that.

When they try to convince the listening audience that a tackle is a good block. Ei: OJ Howard's block on D O'Daniel in the National Championship, that sprung (opened up the edge for) Bo Scarbough to run his frrst TD.

That drives me nuts. You can spike the ball to stop the clock. You can run out the clock. You can even "clock" a dude upside the head, but "clock the ball" is annoying as hell.

Announcers: "The call on the field is a touchdown
(or a catch, fumble, or targeting). There has to be
indisputable evidence in order to overturn the call."
Ok, we get it after all these years.

When they don't even check to make sure they have the correct pronunciation of the player's names. When they don't call the players numbers by name. When they are not even interested enough in the game to talk about it instead of talking about other teams and other games while the game that they are supposed to be announcing is taking place.

On a separate note a bit of advice. You can never use the phrase "3rd and California" too much. Definitely more "3rd and California" and throw in some cow bell while you are at it.

Notre Dame related

Sep 4, 2017, 1:39 PM

I also find it helpful when an ACC team is playing Norte Dame when the announcer explains when the game counts as a conference game and when it does not. Amazing this many years in how many uninformed "fans" are out there.

Too much prattle after a great TD

Sep 4, 2017, 1:43 PM

Let home crowd fill it in for a few seconds, stay out of the way - the Vin Scully rule. Ours can't - or won't - do this. Rodney W. part of problem too. This happened after the Renfro catch - crowd roar not allowed to speak first.

Re: Too much prattle after a great TD

Sep 4, 2017, 4:11 PM

"It's a first down and then some". If it were not for the some, it wouldn't be a first down.

"It these teams are ready to play, we will have a game on our hands".

"He's a red-shirt senior". So what? He's a senior. It's his last year. Quite often many of the seniors have had a red-shirt year. It's not an uncommon thing.

"They're now in the red zone". I wish for once they would show a graphic with the red zone actually in red. They have color marks for the line of scrimmage and the first down mark. Why not the red zone?
