ESPN talking heads - “He runs for a positive gain”

Dec 26, 2020, 7:45 PM

Someone help me out. Can a runner run for a negative gain? Roy Philpott is better than this babble - and I like Roy.

I've heard Todd Ellis say that.....

"....and Lattimore is tackled for a gain of minus three".

Stripped down like Hemingway would be: “He gained.”

Larry Munson: “he’s down to the 45, 44, 43, 42 and a half.”***

Almost.

Book ran for negative 36 positive yards. So yeah, at ESPiN it is possible.

Here is my excuse for that call

They are at home or in a remote studio calling the game. They might have a couple of views but not the typical 6-8, along with not being able to see the whole field.

Typically it would be, “he ran for a gain of about 6, maybe 7”. The refs spots the ball, “and it was a 6 yard gain as he was down right before the yard mark. Now it will be 3rd and 3”.

I will give them a pass when calling the game remotely. It has to be a challenge.
