Nobody talking about the RB's

Apr 12, 2017, 7:15 AM

Feaster seemed to run with a little more authority last Saturday. Hopefully he takes over as the go to guy this year. I know the play calling was vanilla for good reason but I'd like to see us get him the ball in space a little more. He never seems to be able to find a crease and show us that world class speed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll give you a take on all 3.

Apr 12, 2017, 7:24 AM

Fuller was solid and can be a serviceable back. Good out of the backfield. Good catching the ball. Good blocker.
Choice is back. His first run was reminiscent of pre-injury. That cut he made was electric.
But none of that matters. Feaster needs to be fed. He is the only back on the roster that should be feared. I don't care if he can pass block. That's silly. He's a RUNNING BACK. Not a pass blocker. Feed him the rock. Keep the TE in to pass block.

Also, Etienne is gna be a monster.

to have time to get open and you don't want your QB on his back or taking a medical redshirt. The TE generally isn't picking up the blitz like a RB needs to do. There are so many holes in your post.

Spiller was not a "complete" running back. He was fantastic when he got the ball in space, but we've had better running backs.

All around RB Ellington and Gallman were better...

HR threat with blazing speed that is also an elite Return man.... That is Spiller.

To be my RB or to be on my team?

To be on my team... Spiller

To be my RB... Probably Gallman but it is a very very close call between him and Ellington.

Gallman was a tougher runner but Ellington did seem to have more speed.

Wasn't great. Far enough, but he got fairly solid.

Apr 12, 2017, 9:27 AM [ in reply to Re: A RB being able to clock is huge if you want your WR's.. ]

Moreover, if you can't pass block in an offense like ours at the moment you shouldn't be the main guy. Feaster never will be if he can't pass block. The amount of turnovers and 3 and outs due to a RB that can't pick up a blitz would be huge, especially if we have some inexperience at QB who is getting crushed due to a RB who can't block. Sounds like he is getting better at blocking and he knows it's something he needs to work hard doing and is. There's a reason why our staff thinks it's so important. You should trust them at this stage.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Wasn't great. Far enough, but he got fairly solid.

Apr 12, 2017, 9:31 AM

I do trust them. I just want to get back to the Spiller days with Feaster where you hold your breathe every time he touches the ball because you never know when he is gonna take it to the house.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Snowflake Basher........Out

If he couldn't block..

Apr 12, 2017, 9:40 AM

you also would never know when your QB was going to be rushed and throw an INT, an incomplete pass, fumble it, or just a quick 3 and out, or possibly taken out on a stretcher. A qb needs time in a offense that utilizes our WR's as much as we do. Long story short, Feaster needs to be able to be a solid locker or he won't be the starter for long if he earns that job. I enjoy your posts generally, but you're clearly wrong on this issue. That said, how do we know that Feaster won't be a solid blocker this season? He may be solid. I hope he his and earns the job, because he has some serious potential catching the ball at of the backfield too. If you look at his tape he is one of the best pass catching rb's I have ever seen. He reminds Ladainian Tomlinson or someone similar. Tomlinson caught close to 100 passes in a season once as I recall.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You'd trade 2015 & 2016 for the "Spiller Days" ?

Apr 12, 2017, 10:03 AM [ in reply to Re: Wasn't great. Far enough, but he got fairly solid. ]

I mean, I can see what you're saying.

You'd like to have everything we've had the last couple of years *and* an all-american RB who can take it to the house on any given play.

That would be great wouldn't it?

But the point others are making is that a lot of the reason we're 29-1 over the past two years is because Wayne Gallman was more than just a "burner" who made eyes pop and hearts flutter when he got the ball in space.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Is that what I said or are you just making up words?

Apr 12, 2017, 10:40 AM

Don't put words in my mouth. All I said was that I wanted an elite back again. Didn't say I wanted to regress back to those days.

Re: Is that what I said ...

Apr 12, 2017, 10:42 AM

I'm pretty sure you said you want to get back to "the Spiller days" ... I read that to mean that you liked that era better because we had a guy who could take it to the house on any given play. If that wasn't what you meant, then I stand corrected. However, I don't think we win the national title or go 29-1 with CJ Spiller as our primary back. Feaster is going to have to be a better all-around RB than Spiller to help this offense.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Is that what I said ...

Apr 12, 2017, 10:46 AM

Did say "Spiller days", sorry. I only meant that I wanted an elite back again. I really do like Gallman and Choice and Fuller, but let's not kid ourselves. They are simply not on the same level as Cook, Spiller, Scarborough, White, etc.

Gonna agree with Carlsbad on this one.

Might I add that our coaches - who seem to have a pretty good talent for coaching - mention this as 'important'.

Apr 12, 2017, 8:41 AM

Blocking has been important. But it is not more important than running the ball. I don't recall a single time in the entire game that the Bama RB was held in the backfield to block. I'll have to rewatch it later today to confirm. If you can run the football, you don't need your RB to pass block nearly as much.

Blocking for a running back is just as important as catching passes out the backfield. Rbs have to be able to block, that's silly for you to say. If feaster doesn't know how to block and save his Qb you guys would trash him all season.

I can't remember which game it was but i remember Gallman putting a huge block on a defender saving DW time to make a big time throw during a crucial part of the game for a big time catch. Can't remember exactly which game it was but i remember saying Gallman saved us.

You just basically admitted you don't understand the game of Football.

We don't win a National Championship if we don't have Gallmans EXCELLENT pass blocking abilities.

Go watch the coaches table version of the National Championship game. The coaches on there are ooing and ahhing over Gallmans pass blocking.

False. If we had a consistent run game, they wouldn't be able to blitz as much. We have to keep our RB in to block so much because we haven't been able to consistently run the football with a RB.

I would say averaging 5 yards per carry for the season is pretty #### good.

Once again you are advocating for putting a back in the back field that is more than likely going to get your QB hit.

Apr 12, 2017, 7:45 AM [ in reply to I'll give you a take on all 3. ]

On here "I don't care if he can pass block, he's a runner". If the RB can't pass block, you don't have a RB. Go back and look at every play Wayne G was in where he didn't have the ball.....he was either pass protecting or busting his a&$ to get downfield to make another block. Watch him chip the blitzer on the game winning TD at FSU. Watch him chip the guy on DWs first TD against Bama, etc. watch him come out of nowhere to make another block for Cains long run in the NC. SMH

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: one of the dumbest things I've ever read

Apr 12, 2017, 8:28 AM

I understand how important pass blocking is. I also understand that being able to consistently run the football will limit how much the opposing team can blitz. Gallman needing to pass block so much was a direct result of not being able to consistently run the ball.

Fuller is nothing flashy but he is a very good back.

He has Avg 4.3 YPC so far at Clemson he had 4.5 YPC last year.

Also has averaged 9.6 yards per catch in his career so far.

I think Fuller will break out this year. He's a little bowling ball and could easily carry the ball 25 times a game. I think he would be one of those backs that gets tougher and tougher to tackle as the game goes on
