A Wedding To Remember

Mar 1, 2021, 8:57 PM

Weddings usually evoke a lot of compliments about the beautiful bride, the handsome groom decked out in his rented tux and the bride's nice who was so cute throwing rose petals on the floor as the bride was being escorted down the aisle by her father. And once in awhile there is a wedding that evokes a lot of laughs due to some unforeseen events and there is no way an article in the newspaper can convey what really happened.

About 20 years ago we attended the wedding of one of my nephews in Jacksonville, FL. The church where the wedding was held was a temporary sanctuary. The congregation was building a new church. In the meantime they purchased a nearby motel and converted it as best they could to serve as their temporary church. All of the partitions on the first floor were removed, leaving a long narrow room. It was not a high ceiling and the overhead air conditioning vents were putting out a pretty good blast of air.

The brother-in-law of my nephew was walking down the aisle and was to light the two main candles plus other candles around the altar. Unfortunately, the blast of air from the AC vents kept blowing out the candle lighter as he came down the aisle. After two or three attempts, he waited until he got down to the altar to relight the candle lighter.

The bride had one of her friends to tape a song to be sung during the service. The person in charge of the tape player was having difficulty getting the tape player to function properly. We would have been better off had it not been operational because her voice was horrible.

There were a lot of my family members there and we finally realized we were over dressed. Well, the wedding vows were now the center of attention and then came the time for the bride and groom to pick up one of the two lit candles and at the same time light the unity candle and extinguish the candle they were holding. The unity candle was not placed correctly in the unity candle holder so she used a little force to get in securely. The candle holder had a spring at the base. The minister had just resumed the last part of the wedding ceremony when the unity candle came shooting out of the candle holder, probably about four to five feet high. Those sitting on the front pews were wondering it was going to come towards them and every one else broke out in a loud laugh, including the minister. He was so shook up he forgot here he was in his remarks and finally declared them husband and wife.

The reception was held at a nice place down on the river front. Rather than hire a caterer, several of the bride's family friends hosted the reception. The food and goodies were excellent but one of my nieces told us later that she had gone into the kitchen and some of the women were removing crackers from those little two crackers per package that one gets in a restaurant.

I believe that wedding was doomed from the beginning because they were married for about one year before their divorce. But it was a wedding one never forgets. The minister said he would never forget it.

Went to one once at nice church and they had someone recording the vows. Right in the middle a train went by not far away. Kind of derailed the moment I guess you could say

I think any time something goes wrong with the unity candle the marriage is doomed.

During my oldest daughter's wedding ceremony, we heard a commotion at the back of the church but didn't know what happened until later.

We learned that a drunk came into the church and wanted to go to the front to conduct the ceremony. Luckily, my brother in law, a retired Air Force security guy, was back there and got the drunk out of the church with no harm done.

I'll never forget a wedding I attended many years ago. When the minister asked if the groom would take the bride as his wife, the groom asked him to repeat the question!

Shortly before the wedding of two of my friends at Presbyterian College in the mid-70s, one broke a leg and the other injured an eye. I believe the bride’s father had an impairment of some kind that made it difficult escorting his daughter down the aisle. The newspaper in .Clinton interviewed them and had a humorous write up of all the mishaps that had befallen this couple in the week before their wedding.

a chapel where the "minister" had somewhat crossed eyes. The couple could not tell which one of them he was looking at when reading the unrehearsed words so they never knew when to respond. They got so tickled that they could barely finish the ceremony.

We had one funny, but QUICK moment at our wedding. It was a

family affair, with one of my wife's cousins playing the organ, another videotaping the nuptuals. The wedding was held in a side chapel at my wife's families church. This chapel was actually larger than the sanctuary at the church we now attend.

I am waiting at the altar along with my best man and the preacher. The organist starts playing the wedding march, the doors FLY open at the side of the chapel, and, before the fifth note in the wedding march had been hit, my wife soon to be had DRAGGED her father down the aisle and was standing next to me. I am telling you, she was READY to be married.

The preacher who was performing the ceremony was a no nonsense old school type, we even had to cajole him into letting us video the ceremony, setting up the camera on a stationary tripod. When my wife-to-be came flying down the aisle with her father in tow, it was all this straight laced preacher could do to keep from busting out laughing. The expression the video camera caught was priceless. We all just stood there at the altar while the organist completed the playing of the rest of the wedding march.

The only other comedic moment was when my father, the best man, had to search around in his pocket for the ring for my wife, and then took it out still in the box, upside down. I managed to catch it before it hit the floor.

That wedding has lasted 35 years, to date.

We have a family friend that has been married twice and had boyfriends in between. She was getting married again and one of my brothers could not make it and He said tell her he would make it to the next one!

My oldest sister was married four times, but to only the same two men, twice each. extenuating circumstances ended both first marriages, (both men did terrible things to her in different ways), both men swore they had changed, only one of them actually had. She died unexpectedly at age 66, still married to husband 1,4, who was the father of her three children. A totally strange situation that finally worked itself out for the best. I miss my sister every day, even though she has been gone since 2009. She died from massive internal organ failure, so quickly that by the time we got word she was in the hospital in Augusta, she was "gone", being kept here in body only, by machines. I knew she was gone, she and I had the exact same color blue eyes. Hers were now gray.

This was the second time in my life I had to be directly involved in making a decision to take a loved one off life support. It never gets any easier, I can assure you.

Sorry to be a downer in a post about weddings, I woke up melancholy this morning with all that is going on in our life right now.
