Wasn’t there some rule about ND taking an ACC spot?

I thought there was some rule that ND could take one of the ACC bowl spots if they had more wins or higher ranking or something... does anyone know?

Would they be able to replace Wake or UVa/VT in Orange?

This says ND can’t take the ACC’s contracted spot in the Orange Bowl but could be an opponent.

Notre Dame is eligible for any ACC bowl tie-in as long as it’s within one game of the team eligible for the slot.

Again, normally the top available ACC team goes to the Orange Bowl, but there’s no direct tie-in this year since it’s a College Football Playoff semifinal.

1. College Football Playoff Semifinal: If Selected
2. Capital One Orange Bowl vs. New Year’s Six

First Tier

– Camping World Bowl vs. Big 12
– Citrus Bowl (if top possible team is higher-ranked than SEC or Big Ten team) vs. SEC or Big Ten
– Belk Bowl vs. SEC
– Hyundai Sun Bowl vs. Pac-12
– New Era Pinstripe Bowl vs. Big Ten
– Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl vs. SEC
OR TaxSlayer Bowl vs. SEC

– ACC and Big Ten combine in the Music City and TaxSlayer, with each getting three appearances in six years. The ACC played in the Music City in 2015 and the TaxSlayer in 2016, 2017 & 2018. It’s almost certainly going to be in the Music City, but can still play in the TaxSlayer.

Second Tier

– Walk-On’s Independence Bowl vs. SEC
– Military Bowl vs. American Athletic
– Quick Lane Bowl vs. Big Ten
– Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl
Conditional if American Athletic or Conference USA can’t fill the spot.
– Birmingham Bowl
Conditional if American Athletic or SEC can’t fill the spot.

Notre Dame, when not selected for a CFP bowl, falls into the ACC’s bowl selection process. That’s part of its “five-eighths pregnant” agreement with the league. With one loss already this season, it’s unlikely Notre Dame will make the playoff again.

In the case of the Orange Bowl, however, Notre Dame can’t take the ACC’s contracted spot. But Notre Dame can be the opponent in the Orange (and likely will be if it closes out at 11-1 or 10-2).

I can't imagine the Orange Bowl is very excited about a Notre Dame/Virginia rematch, so I'd bet the Orange Bowl people are really hoping that Clemson falls out of the top 4. Everybody is against us!
