There's always something about jeans.
Who the #### cares about wearing jeans an extra day?
But the women in the office are all about wearing jeans.
This is what happens when you let women in the workplace.

I wear the jeans on Friday and DON'T donate to the United Way, which is the deal.

I have a couple of slacks for special occasions but most special occasions I still wear blue jeans if I can get away with it, which usually I can.

Unlimited PTO.
Nov 30, 2020, 9:30 AM
|
|
Sounds awesome, huh? As much time off as you want!
Except its not really like that.
They did that policy a couple years ago for management, because we were firing so many people it became too expensive to pay them out for accrued time when they left. Now its like that for everyone.
That, and they've asked as a policy that we not take more than 3 weeks a year. Also, we have to officially record/request it. So essentially, they've ditched my accrued time that I earned for being here as long as I have, shortened it to 3 weeks, then give me absolutely nothing when I leave/get canned. Many folks don't take any PTO because they are afraid they are being watched and its being used as a reason to fire them, and I'm not sure they are wrong.

PTO accrued. If I got fired today, they would owe me for at least 4 additional pay periods.
If they implemented this policy I would probably quit on the spot.

Personal days do not roll over.
We get 12 sick days per year that roll over. With two small kids, one being in school, I usually take almost all of those 12 sick days.

They have to pay you for your existing balance.
They just stop letting you accrue new balance because it's now "unlimited" but not a defined benefit they have to pay out or account for as a liability.
It sucks if you are senior enough to have lots of vacation. I was up to 5 weeks.
If you are just starting working it's probably great.

Been with this company for going on 9 years (and it's a good company to work for). But about a year ago they went to unlimited PTO. I was at 5 weeks a year earned. I took 2 to 3 and got paid out for the rest every December. Hey, extra paycheck, I'll take it.
But I work for a consulting company, they only get paid when I am working and billing. So to them my taking PTO was actually worse than paying me for it as they pay me only a fraction of what they bill companies for those hours.
Anyway, a few years ago we went to "unlimited" PTO. I imagine it's a bookkeeping thing cause they don't have to carry the liability of each employee being paid out at the end of the year. Effectively I take about the same amount of time off, still have to get it approved both through my employer and the company I'm consulting for. Just one less paycheck a year.
Not a fan.

HR tried to talk it out as a benefit

Then the details came out about only taking 3 weeks and it was obviously only done as a benefit to the balance sheet.

just like a company I know that switched everybody to "points" instead of a set rate.
You get paid per visit (home health) and depending on what that visit entails.
Before it was a flat rate. Type A visit is $20 or whatever.
Now you get so many points for each type of visit and those points are summed at the end of the pay period and you're paid based on those. So type A visit is .9 points while type B visit is .5 points so forth and so on.
All it does is make it more difficult to catch any inaccuracies in pay.

It's a benefit if you are just out of school and only have 2 weeks and want to go home to India for a month.
Otherwise, it's only a benefit if you can actually take the time off and want to take it off.
I was at 5 weeks PTO before the switch.
Told my boss with the change to unlimited I was going to take every other Friday off. He told me,"You can't do that. That's crazy." but that would be 26 days of vacation which is basically what I was getting before.
It's great to say it's unlimited but let someone try to take off a month or two and see what happens.

just about everyone started taking Fridays off.
After 3 months of that, they switched to 4 10s and tightened up on the request process Cousin doesn't seem to care - he still gets Fridays/Mondays alternating to himself with wife and kids at work/school but a day off takes a bunch more hoops

I am motivated by non-toxic work environments where my boss doesn't dangle PTO over my head to put in 80 hour weeks to make up for time lost when I take PTO.

is really all that motivates anyone. we wear jeans daily. travel whenever we want (cept covid). WFH before covid if we wanted. etc. etc.
one thing that went away was the brews in the work fridge. used to be commonplace to crack a beer around 4 with the guys before we left. new owners nixed that.
our leadership did put together a "care package" that was cool. sent us a new note pad / book, some masks, sanitizer, and we get some free shirts. I think that's more a symptom of us whooping errbody's ### this year as opposed to motivational tactics, but idk
we're also 85% male...maybe even 90-95% #engineering

Button-Up shirts normally. I never followed this the first time I worked for this company and it appears as though they are not enforcing it this time around since we are not at Trade and Tryon where the bankers all dress up.
Free K-Cups is a motivator, I guess.
I got a Free Pullover for 5 years of service.
I got a parking pass after a year and a half this time around.
No real perks, other than salary is decent.

No dress code. Wear whatever the fawk you want (unless going to meet a client, or client meeting at the office). Summers are typically t-shirts, shorts, and flip flops. Winters are normally hoodie and jeans.
We have two company trucks (Tacomas) so you don’t have to drive your personal vehicle anywhere. Plus, if you need to borrow it to move, pick up furniture, etc, just sign it out.
Flexible hours. Don’t care when you work, just get your 40 in.
Beer fridge - Grab a beer if you want. Our resident beer expert stocks it, so it’s usually pretty good stuff.
Snack fridge - Hungry? Go get a snack.
Pool table in the break room - Need a mental break? Go play a game.
Those are the few off the top of my head.
This is a good thread though.
