Biggest overachiever in Clemson history

Feb 25, 2021, 1:08 AM

We’ve had several RB’s Gallman & McDowell with is club foot. A few DT’s too. WalkOn’s too!

Re: Biggest overachiever in Clemson history

Fred Cone. Played 8 man football in High School. After Clemson, he played for the Green Bay Packers and was, at one time, their forth leading career rusher.

Uh, Hunter Renfro?

Feb 25, 2021, 7:43 AM

Like that is hard to figure out - NOT. :)

:)

Jethro D. de Bodine's cousin did indeed do well.

Feb 25, 2021, 9:11 AM

He never achieved Brain Surgeon and Agent Double Naught spy status like Jethro, but hey, there was only one Jethro D. Bodine.

(You could have thrown Major League pitcher in there as well, if he hadn't had to lube up the baseball with possum fat before chunking it!)

I'm sorry. I fat-moused it and gave you a TD. That

Feb 25, 2021, 1:05 PM

was not my intention. Glad it didn't affect your TigerPulse.

Gaines Adams or Hunter Renfrow

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Gaines was such a great story

Feb 25, 2021, 8:26 AM

And we have Steve Taneyhill of all people to thank for helping make it happen. RIP Gaines . . . I'll never forget that game at Wake. I've never seen a defensive player single handedly TAKE OVER and turn the tide of a game like he did.

I'm going to throw Dabo Swinney out there for grins. HR is a close second.

That's my favorite reply, along with Dwight Clark.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hunter Renfrow is the name that should immediately come

Feb 25, 2021, 8:52 AM

to mind. However, Hunter's vacuum cleaner hands were well documented from the start, along with his uncanny ability to get open on third down seemingly at will.

To me, the more incredible story is Wayne Gallman. From an almost afterthought signing, to being the feature back and going on to a serviceable NFL career and possibly a decent free agent contract this year, Wayne worked his tail off to get to where he is. Neither a speed merchant nor a shifty cutter, he honed his game on pass blocking, grit, and determination.

I'll throw Dwight Clark into the mix...

Anyone who dates Miss Universe HAS to be considered an overachiever.

Not much of a passing attack when Clark was here

Feb 26, 2021, 9:41 AM [ in reply to I'll throw Dwight Clark into the mix... ]

I think they only targeted him one time down the field. He caught it for a 50 yd. td pass against a good Maryland team.

Patrick Sapp maybe? Talk about reinventing yourself. QB in

Hunter Renfrow

Feb 25, 2021, 9:05 AM

Hands down. I like Ryan Carter on the list too.

I remember everyone saying we signed Wayne gallman and Ryan Carter just to get Ndkemche (however you spell his name) and turns out they had a better college career then him winning a national championship. Ryan was a baller at DB, one of my favorite in the past 10 years

Who was that small walk on center around 15 years ago? Tommy (something)?
He was first team a couple years.
I remember one game he threw up on the ball or darn close to it...before he snapped it!

First one that came to my mind.

Walk-on to starting center, I believe. Threw up on the ball and then snapped it in Georgia game when it was about 120 degrees and we were getting killed.
Legendary stuff.

Keith Adams.

Hunter Renfrow is at the top. Boulware up there also.

HR for sure but Keith "I'm on your a**" Adams, was so fun to watch. For his size, he well over achieved.

I would say Dabo, but I guess you really meant as a "player".

I would recommend Brian Dawkins - guy just kept getting better

Re: Biggest overachiever in Clemson history

I’d add Adam Humphries. Completely under the radar type who is having a solid NFL career.

Chad Kelly.....to have an IQ of 3 and still make the Clemson roster was a phenomenal achievement.

Re: Biggest overachiever in Clemson history

Feb 25, 2021, 12:56 PM

Chandler Catanzaro

I believe he was working for a grocery store when he decided to come to a walkon kicker tryout at Clemson.

Now he ranks with the top kickers in school history and had several very nice years in the NFL.

Other contenders for me include:

Hunter Renfrow - was too small to play for a big school

Adam Humphries - "the other Dorman WR"

Isaiah Simmons - recruited late as a fill-in safety recruit

Vic Beasley - RB/TE/OLB unherealded recruit turned All-American and Pro Bowl DE

I'm sure there are many more, but those really jump out at me.

Honorable mentions go to Will Spiers and Andy Teasdall as QBs - Check the tape!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Better question who's the 2nd biggest overachiever....

Feb 25, 2021, 1:19 PM

I don't see how Renfrow can't be #1

I believe several could be debated for #2....Grady Jarrett included in that group

Re: Biggest overachiever in Clemson history

Feb 25, 2021, 3:39 PM

Kevin Dodd might be in the mix.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dwight Clark

Feb 25, 2021, 5:06 PM

When I hear over achiever, I think of someone doing more than is reasonably expected based on the talent that he was given "on loan from God". My apologies for the "Rush" reference

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dwight Clark - Sadly not much of a passing attack when here

Feb 26, 2021, 9:46 AM

I remember him being targeted one time down the field and it was a 50 yd td pass against a good Maryland team. He was very talented but coaches here at that time did not utilize it. I lived in San Francisco when he made THE CATCH, however he caught many other passes and was a favorite of the fans there.

If we don't have to stay Football . . my vote is Larry Nance.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Levon Kirkland

Feb 26, 2021, 10:03 AM

If memory serves he came out of 1A Lamar HS at about 190 lbs and a 2 star recruit. Ends up being one of the largest LBs ever and had a borderline HOF NFL career.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lots of good names. I'll throw in Gaines Adams***

Feb 26, 2021, 10:24 AM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Has to be Hunter Renfrow but I understand the votes

Feb 26, 2021, 11:12 AM

for Cone, McDowell and even Gallman. Btw how many schools would’ve even stood by its offer to Gallman when the DL five star from the same school decided to flip for the money from Ole Miss? Great talent evaluation by our staff!

2011 bottom of our recruiting class all overachieved by miles. 7 guys played or made it to the NFL by my count -> This is the best not top ranked bottom of our class guys that all contributed huge to our success to where we are now!
