Has the Big Ten threshold of 5% for shutting down a program

been discussed?
If 5% or more of the roster is testing positive at any given time, the program must shut down all activities for at least 7 days. With no bye weeks this means canceling at least one game.
Now I'm not sure exactly how many walk-ons and all most of these teams have, but i think an average CFB squad is 100 or so players. That means just having 5 or 6 guys testing positive gets the entire team shut down for at least a week. How often is that going to happen? Probably a lot.
And in addition to that, any player testing positive has to sit out for 21 days which means missing at least 3 games.
How many games are these B1G teams going to realistically play in 8 weeks? I don't think the answer is 8.

This is like writing rules for anything.
Once you put numbers on a paper, you have no room to adjust to a more lenient decision.
Sometimes less is more.
The fact that the BIG decided to outline minimum requirements for shutdown times and players missing with positive tests means that they have to stick to those numbers.
I haven't seen any other conference be that specific because it puts you in a tight spot to be able to use common sense in certain areas when making decisions.
For example: Charlotte just cancelled a game with only three positives and some quarantine around them citing lack of O-line as the reason to cancel.
Imagine if a BIG team has several o-lineman from one team test positive. That's minimum 21 days without all of them when the general consensus from SCDHEC is that you are no longer contagious after 10 days. That's one or two extra games that any player will miss with a positive test.

They still can manipulate the numbers. For example, the larger the pool they start with the more positives required to reach 5%. Thus they may decide to test very ancillary people and call them “football staff”.
That said, unless they get >5% positives from a test AND >7.5% positive across the population there is effectively no issues (aside from those sidelining the individual players). That said it behooves them to have as large a population as possible (it is unclear to me who is included in the “total population”).

That works both ways though.
The larger the population that you include, the more difficult it is to be sure they are following protocols and avoiding risks.

True..you just have to be selective with the folks you select

For example, if the spouses/families of the coaches are part of the plus ups you can probably influence that.

I was thinking it specifically says player roster

So the only thing i can really think of to game those numbers would be to have some reserves on the roster quarantine all year and not actually participate in any football activities. Their sole job on the team would be to provide positive test results each week. Haha...
I think that kind of thing would get leaked out though and get the coaching staff eviscerated. I could see a coach getting fired over that.

The Big Ten set up their rules so that it could not happen

Then they can say, see...we were right and there should not have been a football season.
Also, they can get rid of the lawsuits they were going to lose.

Geez the conspiracy theories.

Why then did California and Oregon give the OK for CFB today? You would think if Pelosi were trying to shut down CFB she would at least ensure CFB didn't resume in her own state.

Check and see the "protocols" before you decide.

Cali and Oregon are hurting for money. Probably to also quell the riots.

This is second cancellation for VT. Didn't their original opener with NCState get canceled and moved too? They are going to run out of dates for makeup games if this continues.
