Why do you claim so much AND pay $500/month additional?

WAT?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Id done mine back in mid '14

Apr 6, 2017, 10:15 AM

SheGUAR got new job in Feb '16, and that's the first time we even saw the Two-Earner worksheet
So, she filled hers out as such...

I'd filled mine out the same way since forever (granted, the # of kids changed, but not since '12), and we'd always gotten $$ back...I'm not even sure I went back in to double-check it until today

I no understand why you people are claiming so many

Apr 6, 2017, 10:16 AM

but then pay at the end of the year. You know how that dependents thing works, right? The less you claim the more that is deducted each pay period.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

technically besides the initial shock of seeing what you owe

Apr 6, 2017, 10:18 AM

isn't it better off to have held on to that money and collected a whopping .75% on it?

bottom line is bottom line....

but that shock tho....i want to throw up

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well...I guess.

Apr 6, 2017, 10:19 AM

Did you invest that money to make your .075% interest?

I'd think it'd be better to not have to come up with anything at the end of the year so you're not all "Oh chit..we can't eat for the next month".

and why u do when u do

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: changing the exemptions

Apr 6, 2017, 11:14 AM

TOTE1 is not like you LDR. He is hourly and paid every two weeks. That means he gets 26 checks. 24 of them have insurance and other elected deductions taken out. 2 of them don't. So he ups his claimed dependents to get more cash flow. Also he lives on budget so there are no bills to pay out of those two checks. Its like a semi annual bonus.

The exempt check is his xmas bonus.

TOTE1 also gets an annual phyical year end bonus in May which he complemtates going exempt on every year but never does b/c its a fatass check and is afraid that the 40% taxes is too much to overcome throughout the rest of the year and he'd wind up paying.

He claims 5 throughout the year b/c he's supposed to claim 6 based on the W4 worksheet but doesn't want to push it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I do quarterly payments

Apr 6, 2017, 7:53 PM

Typically have a credit that carries towards next year's Q1. My taxes are way too complicated for me to handle personally.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

obviously comes down to your deductions...

Apr 6, 2017, 8:34 PM

i.e. mortgage interest and charity. Do you not have much in those areas to knock down your tax liability?

I recalculate mine with the IRS tool every year. I always aim to owe $1000 to feds when I do my taxes each year. I have a variable bonus component to compensation, so it makes it hard to get it correct every year. But wife-of is stay-at-home Mom with a little income some side gigs she has, so I essentially just have one income to worry about.

I'm confused why you would be doing an additional withholding every month instead of just putting that same $$ aside for tax time. If you're claiming 0 exceptions on W-4, no way IRS comes after you for under-withholding.
