Around the horn offense

Jan 23, 2020, 6:16 AM

It looks like our half court offense to me
consists of passing the ball around the
perimeter until the shot clock goes to 4 seconds
and then chunking up a 3.

I wish we had an offense with more back doors cuts and
slashers toward the hoop.

Am I missing something or do ya'll see that too?

We play great defense most of the game but we need
something else on offense.

This is a bit of an overreaction, we did a little bit too

much of the around the horn passing against Wake Forest because they played a lot of zone which we weren’t used to. The zone makes it very difficult to penetrate the lane and get inside because you typically have two big men guarding the hoop. So often times the holes in the zone are at the perimeter, which is why you saw our best perimeter player tie a career high. In the NC State game it was very low paced as both teams were content with keeping it in the half court for pretty much the whole game, we actually got pretty good shots up in the NC State game, but something important to keep in mind is that those back cuts to the basket hardly ever work when your opponent doesn’t respect you from 3 because they won’t guard you very tight at the perimeter meaning it will tough to drive at the basket. We didn’t shoot well from three therefore the back cuts hardly worked, back cuts are just a counter to over-aggression on the perimeter, if there’s not over-aggression at the perimeter there’s nothing to counter. Sorry for the long post, just thought it was kind of necessary.

you are missing a lot and focusing on just the ball

Its hard sometimes to do due to camera angle and such, but try to watch what the other players are doing and not just the ball. Our offense has plenty of action built into it such as screens/slashers, pick and roll, back cuts, etc.. The problem is the execution requires timing and a ball handler who doesnt hesitate. Any hesitation or timidness throws the timing off and ruins the play. Hence, the ball going around the perimeter repeatedly until they have to shoot. Our guys just need to get confident and quit playing timid. Sometimes the window isnt big and you just have to be confident and trust the offense. You have to know the offense so that you can just run it and not have to think. Its kinda like in football a rb has to trust that a hole is going to be where it is supposed to be. If you wait for the hole, its too late and youve missed your chance. Or like a qb throwing to a wr on a timing route before he comes out of his break. You have to trust that the wr is going to run the proper route and be where hhe supposed to be. If you wait, then the defense will be able to catch back up.

There's a lot more to it than that.***
