Mangey, but I have a better chance of surviving here...

Coach V was in play for the Auburn job. Mutual interest.

Not totally positive, but I think he actually turned it down. Contrary to what any of us thinks, he does want to be a head coach at some point. That's all I know.

If they - supposedly - love K Steele, but maybe don't think

Dec 22, 2020, 2:15 PM

he is HC material, I don't see why they would try to hire BV instead? Maybe applying logic to it isn't really helpful. It is auburn after all.

Well, I think a few heavy hitters wanted Steele, but most

wanted to go in a different direction. It's crazy because Auburn is a school that you can absolutely win at. But nobody is really crazy about the job because the BOT/admin seems so screwed up.

Auburn is a school that looks great on the surface.

Yet, the real problem there is internal politics. It's haunted them forever. Unless they catch lighting in a bottle like with Cam Newton, it's not a place that any coach can consistently stay at the top of the SEC. A lot like Clemson on the surface, and a lot like UofSC underneath. Nobody is ever going to sustain a great program there because of it. Again, they can have 9 and 10 win seasons, but that's not good enough for a fanbase whose expectation is beat Bama at least 50% of the time, win the SEC with some regularity, and stay in the conversation for national championships. Not gonna happen...not as long as they let the inmates run the asylum down there. It's potentially a good stepping stone for a coordinator to move up, as long as a coach can get enough resume together to get out before the bottom falls out of the wet paper bag.

If they could get similar alignment that Clemson currently

has, then that program could easily be a top 5 program.

But, sorta like Clemson in the 90's, probably got some dying out to do.

Pretty much.

If there's a weak link in the chain of University BOT > University President > Athletic Director > Head Coach > Coaching staff > players then the house of cards will fall in at some point. That's the biggest reason I really liked seeing Clements and Radakovich staying put. Dabo gets all the love, but he wouldn't be where he is without that chain being strong at every link.

Auburn spent $23M on Gus's buyout, and can't afford to buy

Dec 22, 2020, 2:27 PM

out all of his assistants, too, so they're (allegedly) insisting that any new coach keep a good portion of the existing staff. That's why they're getting turned down by the UAB coach.

I heard Sark (Bama OC) turned it down also

Dec 22, 2020, 4:22 PM

from a Bama fan so maybe.

I woulda thrown all the money Sark's way.

Dec 22, 2020, 4:52 PM

All of it. Screw you Bama.

(But not sure how much money Auburn has left to throw)

They need an offensive minded guy....

Dec 22, 2020, 4:14 PM

Very few DCs turn out to be good head coaches.

I thought TE would take it.

My Auburn office folks are pretty sure they'll have Steele as their next HC. And from the rumors, Steele will go old school SEC with good defense and garbage, pound the ball, offense. Even Saban gave up on that style.

Honestly, I think the next Auburn coach should run the

quadruple option, because A) the SEC won't expect it, and 2) it's one better than the triple option.

I think Auburn is gonna end up hiring Freeze.

Dec 22, 2020, 5:02 PM [ in reply to They need an offensive minded guy.... ]

Which is, honestly, who they should have targeting from day 1.

Freeze is a perfect fit there for a multitude of reasons.
