I think I've regaled the Jounge with this story before, but when I was at Clemson we drove to see him at a country bar in Athens, GA. The place was filled with the worst sort of dregs of humanity...redneck crackers, outlaw bikers, you name it, they were represented. Coe comes out to start his set and someone throws a crushed beer can and hits his guitar. He stops mid-song, sets the guitar down, and proceeds to challenge the culprit to step up on stage. Nobody moves. He then proceeds to challenge anyone in the bar to step up on stage saying that we were "gonna get our money's worth seeing a show or fight", didn't matter to him which. Again, nobody moved and you could have heard a sewing pin hit the floor and echo. I remember that some very large and dangerous-looking men had nervous looks on their faces. After a few seconds he turns and picks up the guitar, and says "that's what I thought" and proceeds to finish the show without a hitch. Coe in his prime was a big scary dude. Coe the last two times I saw him open up the day at Willie's 4th of July picnic was a shell of man that played sitting down in a chair and had to be helped up when he was done. Pretty sure he could still throw a punch that would rock you.
