Ohio State started the season No. 1 in the metric with a 34.8 percent chance of going undefeated

That is pure T awesomeness. What are their chances now?

What kind of math wizardry is this?

Math. Hmph.

No team is given more than 28% chance to beat us??

Maybe we are getting a little too much respect here.

I hate to bring up the Pittsburgh loss last year. Espn's formula didn't work......

It is still played on the field.

These statistics serve one primary purpose...

Sep 23, 2017, 8:15 AM

To increase betting on college football games and team to win it all. While the games are still played and won on the field, there is a lot of betting and these types of statistics are gathered by those that set the odds or make a living off gambling (on either side). They provide all this data to us in hopes that it gives us confidence and empowerment (whether real or false) to place more bets.

The same is seen in the stock market, where the professionals gather a bunch of statistics that either help them look for good opportunities or help them sound like they know what they are doing so we'll trust them more. Then they share their data with all of us in hopes that we feel empowered to make more trades, either through them or websites where you do it yourself and pay a fee each trade.

Hopefully none of the coaches or players are using these numbers to decide how serious to take each opponent, but we fans can enjoy them for what they are worth.

Good summary. As a fan, I certainly don't feel empowered to place any bet based on math models. They're only as good as the input data. I'd rather judge on field play as the year goes on. With Clemson, I have a much better win percentage than FPI!
