Quick fix for the O-line.

Nov 8, 2020, 1:46 AM

Teach them to HOLD like everybody else that plays us. Ian Book had time to write a book.
There is no way you can keep a 300 pound man at bay that long by just blocking.
It’s an art form that Alabama has honed to perfection.

play. Bresee, Murphy, Davis, and XT are all vitually unblockable unless they are held. Watch for that handful of jersey that refs simply choose to ignore.

And while your talking quick fixes, pass along the game film to our opponents on how to fumble the football inside your own territory for scoop and scores in back to back games.

Sad but true

Both of which happened, in part, due to defenders

blowing up our offensive line and penetrating into the backfield and disrupting the pitch/handoff.

the hands:

Grasp the defensive lineman's jersey with your hands so you can steer him to one side or the other when attempting to open a hole. The rules allow the offensive lineman to use his hands during the blocking process as long as he is grasping the front of the opponent's jersey and not the sides or the back.

No, they don't.

Rule 9, Article 3a Provision 2:

The hand(s) shall be open with the palm(s) facing the frame of the opponent or closed or cupped with the palms not facing the opponent

and 3b:

The hand(s) and arm(s) shall not be used to grasp, pull, hook, clamp or encircle in any way that illegally impedes or illegally obstructs an opponent.

A player MAY NOT grasp the defensive linemen's jersey with their hands to steer them to one side or the other, That is the very definition of holding. This is a problem - referees have done such an abominable job of enforcing this rule, that many football "experts", players, and even coaches truly believe that grasping with the hands to steer the defender is acceptable. Shame on refs for turning a blind eye to this infraction and allowing blatant holding 98% of the time, then altering the course of games by calling it randomly.

Thank you for the clarification per the rules. The frontal holding is taught because it's usually not called.

A similar situation exists on defensive pass interference, where the defender grabs the jersey of the receiver, a technique that our defenders are obviously taught to do as we seem to get away with it more than most teams.

Exactly. Most people assume it's legal because it's taught

Nov 9, 2020, 10:11 PM

and they see it so often. The sad truth is, that just how massively refs have failed us.

Yeah that’s la-la land wishing on the rules. Not only is grasping the front of the jersey accepted but most WRs and TEs are firmly grasping outside the shoulder/arm area especially at the point of attack where the ball carrier is coming. We do this all the time - imagine how bad our run game would be if we didn’t. DBs and LBs reach out with their alligator arms while clearly being held on every play. The game has “evolved” because TV believes high scoring equals more viewers.

It's accepted because people are ignoarnt. Let's just

scrap the rule book and do whatever people want in the moment. We could turn it into American Ninja Warriors - that's popular right now! Yay! If they want to allow grasping of the jersey, they should grow a set of balls and change the rule and quit cowardly hiding behind some unwritten understanding and pretending they don't see it or don't know any better.

That's not the way they call it though...They will let you

grab as long as it's inside the shoulders and your arms don't fully extend...You can grab them in the numbers with your elbows bent all game and they won't call it

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh, trust me, I know, but they are wrong. That's the point.

Nov 10, 2020, 11:33 PM

And occasionally they do call it, and just like pass interference, it comes across as totally random and therefore unfair because they let it slide 95% of the time. It's right there in the rules, plain as day, in black and white. Refs have chosen to ignore a rule until they decide not to.
