I like Chris Wallace and think he is a seasoned professional

Sep 30, 2020, 12:19 PM

but last night was not his finest hour. He totally lost control of Trump to the point where he was telling Trump to stop talking while saying "Mr. President, you're gonna like this next one" or "this next question is about race, but you can talk about anything you like."

Trump curb stomped Chris Wallace, an experienced professional. I think that says more about Trump and how everything he touches turns to chaotic ####.

It will be interesting going forward to see how the debate commission addresses the problem created by a candidate that thinks laws and rules and decorum are only intended to constrain his opponents.

Turning off Trump's mic would be a good start, but the

Sep 30, 2020, 12:27 PM [ in reply to How about there is one microphone... ]

rules are already in place and any change would require Trump to agree to them.

Given his obvious debate strategy, could you see him agreeing to that?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't see why they have to agree...

Sep 30, 2020, 12:33 PM

The smart people who run the debates should be able to make that call. Do they have to agree to wearing pants?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But, they do have to agree.

Sep 30, 2020, 12:53 PM

Do you think Trump would agree to those rules?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't know.

Sep 30, 2020, 12:54 PM

He was interrupted, too, and I'm sure he would like not to have been.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think he disliked it...

Sep 30, 2020, 1:03 PM

I think the idea was to frustrate Biden with interruptions and attacks in the hopes that he would get agitated and lose his train of thought. I have had clients with early dementia and they usually do not do well when giving testimony because they get confused and flustered and shut down. I think Trump was trying to push that button with Biden.

But I think a happy accident side effect of Trump's tactic was that even though he failed to get Biden to appear to have lost it, he did get Biden to come down into the mud with him and wrassle. Which kept Biden from running away with the debate given the low expectations going in.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-fordprefect.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Biden started messing up a lot toward the end.

Whoa now, you know the rules here: no logic or reason allowed!

I suggest both enter the squared circle, refereed by Stone Cold Steve Austin (or Goldberg, whichever is free that night). Winner becomes POTUS, loser is VPOTUS. Any outside help/aid/influence is an automatic forfeit & they also forfeit their VPOTUS role to their most hated rival: Hillary/Chelsea or Ivanka/DJT, Jr/Eric combo.

I thought Chris Wallace did a great job considering who and

Sep 30, 2020, 12:29 PM

what he was dealing with. He was persistent and firm in dealing with petulant behavior, mainly from the most powerful man in the world. I hear an awful lot of beotching from both sides about him, but honestly don't know what people expected him to do.

I agree that Chris tried and failed to restrain Trump, which

Sep 30, 2020, 12:32 PM

is why I said it says more about Trump than Chris.

But, ultimately, Wallace failed every single time to prevent Trump from bulling through the china shop, preventing the American people from getting anything resembling a presidential debate.

It was a trainwreck.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Short of having a button to mute mics...

Sep 30, 2020, 12:29 PM

what would you have him do? At times Trump appeared to think that he was there to debate Wallace.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As I said in the post, "it says more about Trump than Chris"

Sep 30, 2020, 12:34 PM

but yes, a mute button would be helpful.

However, that would require the debate commission to propose the change and the Trump camp to accept.

Do you think Trump would agree to that change?

Sep 30, 2020, 12:30 PM

Nothing can prepare a moderator or tv viewing audience for what we saw last night.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree.

Sep 30, 2020, 12:42 PM

Nothing prepares anybody - not a seasoned professional like Wallace, a tv viewing audience or an opposition candidate - for the sh!t show that Trump put on last night.

That was my point.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think there's much more he could have done

Sep 30, 2020, 12:38 PM

with preventing the cross-talking.

Based on my reading, my main problem is the same with all these debates. I wish the questions were just questions. Why is there a whole paragraph of statements before the question? I'll give an example. Wallace talks for several sentences about past statements and stuff, and then asks the President "What is your healthcare plan?" Why not just say, "Mr. President, what is your healthcare plan?" All the previous statements just generate all the arguing.

I would like for each question asked to literally be a one-sentence question.

Good point, Prod...

This happens in press conferences and interviews, too.

Sep 30, 2020, 12:46 PM

It's like, we don't really want to hear the questioner talk...thanks.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you watched the debate, the cross talking wasn't the

Sep 30, 2020, 12:46 PM [ in reply to I don't think there's much more he could have done ]

actual problem. It was Trump talking over both the candidate and the moderator and never following the rules he agreed to. Even Chris Wallace pointed out that the problem was Trump.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I see it from both.

Sep 30, 2020, 12:47 PM

But, granted, more from the President.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And you admitted you did not watch the debates.***

Sep 30, 2020, 12:51 PM

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I see it in the transcript

Sep 30, 2020, 12:53 PM

That I am reading.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OK. You feel a transcript gives you the same impression

Sep 30, 2020, 12:56 PM

as actually having witnessed an event.

I would think that is an extremely unique opinion.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Never even came close to saying that.

Sep 30, 2020, 12:57 PM

Nope.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So, you agree that not watching an event does NOT give you

Sep 30, 2020, 12:58 PM

an accurate representation of what actually happened?

I agree with that.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Uh, no.

Sep 30, 2020, 1:00 PM

You are strawmanning big time here.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just pointing out that by not watching the actual event

Sep 30, 2020, 1:03 PM

means your impression of what actually happened lacks perspective.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Obviously, and someone who doesn't read the transcripts

Sep 30, 2020, 1:05 PM

will lack that perspective.
