number of sign-ups for the ACA, and the numbers underneath, like who is a paying customer, how many were uninsured before they signed up.

Seems to me that could backfire. Even the press corps is dubious, although they should take his word for it. I mean, why would he lie about the ACA?

Everybody should be happy about newly insured people

The question is how many of these people were uninsured before going on the exchanges. We could also ask whether this is really cost- effective or really the same thing as getting a new insurance plan, as many who are being counted are actually being signed up for Medicaid and we don't know much about who actually signed up (age, health status, etc).

2. This 7 million is definitely not the same thing as the 7 million insured individuals the CBO had projected the exchanges would cover this year, though it’s a convenient coincidence. Whatever Secretary Sebelius’s exactly meant when she mentioned the same number as a metric for success last fall, the actual plan purchases the CBO was projecting seem likely to short of the 7 million number: If 85 percent of sign-ups pay their premiums, to take one estimate, that’s about 6 million people who actually get plans.

Moreover, the CBO’s 7 million projection was for covered individuals over the course of the year — since it’s a budgetary projection, this is an average over the course of the year, and not a specific number of individuals (e.g., it could be 7 million people covered for the whole year, or 6 million covered for the whole year plus 2 million for six months each, etc.). Surely as many people will drop off the exchanges as will join them because they lose a job or other insurance later this year, so we shouldn’t expect too many net new signups. Paid enrollment could even shrink noticeably.

But if HHS continues to count anyone who picks a plan on the exchange as an enrollment — and someone who’s gained insurance thanks to the ACA – we could be seeing a substantially larger enrollment number by the end of the year, a good bit over 7 million. Which will be a meaningless number, since the question should be how many people the program is covering, not how many have ever enrolled, but it’s possible they trot it out. (They’ve certainly been shameless about the Medicaid numbers.)

Your posts are generally tenable. I have a great friend in our neighborhood that I wish you could talk to. He is retired and had only catastrophic insurance. His wife had nothing because of obesity and other problems and underwent a thyroidectomy recently that cost them a bundle even though the hospital system worked with them to reduce costs greatly.

They recently enrolled the ACA and now have affordable full coverage. Now, this guy is an independent leaning a bit on the liberal side and he loves to play devil's advocate with me, we argue politics constantly but have never become angry with each other. We feel that the ACA has potential and agree with the CIC that the opponents (who have no viable alternative) should quit simply saying no and assist in proposing changes that would improve this already successful program. The CIC issued this invitation yesterday.

Then, there is always someone like a non-Tiger wag who call the ACA "Obummer care" (whatever that is???). Those dudes just need to be quieted by rational thinking.

Regards.

Based on his history, he ain't worried about it backfiring.***

it would be much better if the system collapsed and a a few million people died. This way conservatives could point the finger and say I told you so.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually, we dont need everyone going to college

Apr 2, 2014, 7:56 AM

We need laborers and unskilled labor, our problem is that many uneducated people are too lazy to work hard for a living.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I keep forgetting there are all these extra jobs for the uneducated

Apr 2, 2014, 12:33 PM

and they are just too lazy to work. Thanks for the fox news update.

we need to accept that when technology eventually replaces all of our jobs, the monetary system will fail and we will need to re-structure how we divide resources, (hint: it will not be a monetary system)

In my lifetime, pretty much every retail, transportation, food service, and manufacturing job will be automated. Are you going to suggest that everyone that gets displaced by automated labor is lazy and should starve?

People are actually working toward and economy where technology makes are lives easier and people are not hung out to dry. Instead of constantly pointing the finger down, maybe you should re-join the human race and start addressing solutions.

Thousands of trade jobs are going unfilled in the US right

Apr 2, 2014, 12:56 PM

now, especially welders and pipefitters. Crews are staffed by guys who travel hundreds of miles from site to site. There is a very real shortage of skilled tradespeople in construction, and these are jobs that pay very well, $80k and up.

A couple of things about that:

Apr 2, 2014, 11:18 AM [ in reply to Re: Obama taking a victory lap with only their word for the ]

1). There are no guarantees that this system will not collapse, no matter how many hopeless Obamaphiles continue to buy into the whole pie in the sky free lunch idea that universal coverage will be cheap. Or how much they insist that Republicans want everyone to die.

2). It is looking likely that the Dems will lose the Senate in the Fall, and then Obama will more or less be forced to work with someone to keep the ACA viable. He certainly hasn't worked with any Dems in the last few months, and is in fact going to be the reason that their Senate loss will happen. It is an opportunity to try and fix the "law of the land," and try to get something workable in place.

Make no mistake about it. The President isn't stupid.

Apr 2, 2014, 11:38 AM [ in reply to That implies that there was a brilliant strategic plan in ]

He's the figure head for the machine working behind the scenes. Which really isn't that much different than most Presidents. This one just has a completely complicit media, and "Alinsky's" any member who tries to go against the grain. Add to that the overwhelming number of progressives on both sides of the isle.

But hey.. This is what the people voted for. We get what we deserve and the Republic suffers because of it.

Possibly. Just not my take on him.

Apr 2, 2014, 11:46 AM

I think the worst part is that he knows he's over his head. He knew it before the end of his first term. He doesn't want to be there anymore. Geez...Russia invaded another country. Who wants to deal with that? It's EXHAUSTING, and difficult, and requires strategic, proactive thinking and a nuanced understanding of power and leadership and international diplomacy and the role of the United States in the world. PASS. Besides, people are just going to be mad at him no matter what he does. He didn't sign up for that. Everyone was supposed to do what he said and get along. For goodness sake, he's giving you free health care. What more do you people want?
