Punting, we lost 60 yards of field position Saturday.

Dec 6, 2020, 8:12 PM

When your team average 26 yards.
And the opposition averages 41.

13 of 15 in net ACC punting.

65th in country.

Not sure why we cannot get a good or great punter.

Frustrating to watch our opposition punters have great days and us - not so much.

Spiers has been punting great this season, just had a bad game, probably result of cold and wind.

Dec 6, 2020, 8:22 PM

Sad part is, I would have agreed with you until I looked up the ACC and national stats.
13 of 15 and 60 th.

Which means, I for one have gotten very comfortable with less than good punting.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Spiers has been a great situational punter

Dec 6, 2020, 8:24 PM

It'd be great to have a guy who kicks it 80 yards, but Spiers has been doing what we ask of him all year... limit return yards, and don't get it blocked. Bad night last night, for sure, but otherwise a solid year.

He has been much improved over last year. Not sure

Dec 6, 2020, 8:28 PM

what happened last night. Maybe VA tech doing something that had him rattled. Maybe cold. Maybe bad game. This is first time this year where I felt he was a liability

Re: He has been much improved over last year. Not sure

Dec 7, 2020, 5:25 AM

Looked to me like VT was pressuring him from the right side of the O-line to keep him from kicking it Aussie/Rugby style. That resulted in him having to kick high into the wind. At least that's what I was thinking at the time. He's had a great year for us, though.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He has gotten one blocked though and some others have

Dec 7, 2020, 1:18 PM [ in reply to Spiers has been a great situational punter ]

been very close. I know we've some protection issues on both punts and fgs, but he holds onto the ball a really, really long time on some of those rugby punts. He almost got one blocked against VT.

Dec. 19th in Charlotte won't be warm and humid....hopefully

he puts his feet warmers in by that game.

Why the heck do you put a z in Clemson?

Dec 6, 2020, 8:41 PM

any true fan knows the "z" is wrong. There should be a hint of a "P" in there.

Re: Why the heck do you put a z in Clemson?

Dec 6, 2020, 8:45 PM

As I went to Clemson and graduated in 1981 and been to more games than I can remember to include all three natties, I will say I am a “true” fan.

The spelling is due to me having a state license plate from the many states I have lived for the past 40 years. I tried many different ways of spelling, etc and Clemzn came back available. So I took it.

Where are you seeing this 26-yard average?

I'm seeing 38.9 net yards according to https://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/98/p2

And according to https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/

Spiers is averaging 44.1 for the season and 41.3 for his career.
Pinion averaged 42.6 his senior year and 41.1 for his college career.
Hatcher averaged 43.7 his senior year and 42.9 for his college career.

Spiers' 4 punts Saturday went as follows"

1st had heavy pressure. He rushed it out to avoid a block, hit it low, and VT got a 14 yard return.

2nd punt was straight into the wind. Looked like he hit it decent but it went nowhere. Still the longest of the night. Fair catch.

3rd punt was abysmal and he would like to forget it ever happened. No excuse for a college punter to hit a ball like that. I have no clue what happened other than he almost missed the ball with his foot.

4th punt fair caught inside the 20. Hit it well. It had to be short because of field position. I think the wind still knocked it down shorter than where he would have liked for it to be caught.

If you will remember Potter also had a kickoff that fell came down at the 8 yard line instead of going through the end zone. There wasn't constant wind but there was a tunnel in the stadium and any ball that hit it got knocked down quickly.

Hopefully Spiers can bounce back in the ACC title game.

TheACC.com shows him as sixth in the conference:

Dec 7, 2020, 11:13 AM

https://theacc.com/stats.aspx?path=football&year=2020

He’s averaging 43.9 and the best punter in the ACC is averaging 47.7.

NCAA’s website has him EIGHTH NATIONALLY:

https://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/individual/17

Not sure why the data is a bit off between the two but the long and short of it is we are fine at punting. You looked at team punting average and it would appear we let someone other than Spiers in there and they brought down the team average, which is fine.

Have you watched any game this year!
Spiels is having an all conference kind of year!
Good grief dude!

Does Clemson have another Punter , or do we have to go with 20 , or 30 yard punts all the time , we will need 40 , & 50 yard punts against ND ,

Just a very rare off-night (couple of bad punts).
I’m hoping he comes back next year for his free “COVID year.”

He has had a good season, it was looking like a great season but the last 3 games have been not so great.
Don’t know why he is getting worse as the season goes but he has proved he can be a good punter.

My preference would be if he had 0 yards.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

According to Danny Ford.

Dec 7, 2020, 12:58 PM

The perfect punt is 40 yards with a 4.5 second hang time.

Now obviously there are situations where you would kick it shorter when you want to pin someone deep when you are just outside of field-goal range, but typically when you’re punting you’re not in that gray area. But the logic is to be consistent and to make the other team fair catch every punt.

It has become popular to do those Australian kicks so the ball hits the ground and you get a long roll. But typically you end up downing your own punt. Thus losing an opportunity for a turnover.

Ideally you want a high kick with good hang time which puts pressure on the receiving teams punt returner to cleanly catch the ball knowing he is surrounded by defenders. A muffed or fumbled punt is such a momentum turning play. So is a poorly executed punt.

So many people overlook special teams, but it is 1/3 of the game and I have seen teams totally dominated on both sides of the ball still win a game because of special teams. That’s exactly what happened in 1988 when FSU beat Clemson in the punt-rooskie game! Clemson dominated that game, but Deion sanders with a huge kick return to the Clemson 35 and a punt return for a TD from midfield kept FSU in the game.
