Thank God for Clemson men like Rudy Anderson...

Nov 2, 2019, 5:56 AM

Please remember him today at the game.

Born: 15 September 1927, Greenville, S.C.

A Greenville native and a member of the Clemson Class of 1948, was shot down while flying a reconnaissance mission in a U2 spy plane. His air surveillance of the island nation of Cuba in early October 1962 proved essential to the detection of Soviet surface-to-surface, medium-range ballistic missiles, some 90 miles from the Florida coast.

Rudy Anderson didn’t have his Clemson classmates with him...or any of his family...or even any of his fellow airmen to comfort him miles above Cuba flying his final mission. He was all alone except for a Peace “which passeth all understanding.” And a peace that came from the knowledge that his fellow tigers and loving family and brave comrades would sleep well in their beds that night...and for many nights to come thanks to his sacrifice.

Is it close to Rudolf Anderson's memorial in Cleveland

Park? Anderson was the only US serviceman killed when his plane was shot down over Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the early 60's.

Anderson went to Greenville High School, my high school, along with several Governors of South Carolina.

One and the same! ????

There are a number of pedestals with story boards that detail Maj Anderson’s life, from his childhood in Greenville up to and including the Cuban Missile Crisis shootdown. I believe an organization (civic, etc.) renovated/updated the memorial a number of years ago.

Whatever choice(s) you make makes you. Choose wisely.

Greenville HS has had a lot of notorious alumni

like Governors Richard Riley and Carroll Campbell among
probably others as well as Rudy Anderson, Joanne Woodward, etc.

I always thought it was interesting and maybe a tad
humorous that Governor Riley went on to be President
Clinton's Secretary of Education when SC has always
ranked at or near the bottom of states for secondary
education. There are a lot of good middle and high schools
in SC, but some counties struggle for various reasons.

I ride my bike on the Swamp Rabbit, and always make it a point to stop at the memorial.

It is a nice tribute to him, well done. I found it ironic - and as fate would have it - that he wasn’t actually on the schedule to fly that day. Even though the Cubans had fired at a previous reconnaissance flight, he volunteered to take this mission.

Inscribed on the stone placed at the airplane:

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. John 15:13

There is no measure for what we owe Maj Rudy Anderson and far too many more just like him.

To paraphrase: I like people who weren’t shot down.
