Tennis dominance

Jun 23, 2020, 7:56 PM

Since 2003 Federer, nadal, and the joker have combined to win 56 of 65 grand slam titles, around 86% and over 385 million in career earning. Imagine if tiger could have had 2 other golfers that were on his level for his years of dominance.

Yes, it was Tiger #1 by a mile. Phil a distant #2. Then the field.

the nature of golf doesn’t really allow for that the same way

Personally I am ready for some more variation In tennis. Have been for years actually. The younger generations have not stepped up to challenge the top 3.

Nobody younger than 30 has won a grand slam. The few that have broken the big there’s reign (Stanislas Wawrinka, Andy Murray, Juan Martín Del Potro, Marin Cilic) are all north of 30 now as well

i Believe it is 56 of 67 btw, since Federer’s first in 2003 Wimbledon

Off the top of my head I count ...

3 for Murray,
3 for Wawrinka,
2004 French open for Gaston Gaudio
2005 Australian Open for Marat Safin
2009 US open for Juan Martín Del Potro
2014 US open for Marin Cilic

As the exceptions

Didn't Murray retire?

they gave him a retirement send off

But he’s actually going to try and post again. He had a successful hip surgery, so we will see how it goes

The French can really give you some "who is that guy?"

winners... prior to Nadal of course. I guess if you follow tennis really closely and know the clay court specialists it's not such a surprise to see a Gaston Gaudio winning the tournament, but for anyone that mostly just watches the grand slam tournaments, there are some really obscure players making deep runs in the French.

The French really was the most unpredictable before Nadal

Gaston Gaudio was a big surprise. He was not one of the 32 seeds in that tournament. The big favorite that year was fellow Argentine Guillermo Coria who was the beast on clay at the time.

In the final big favorite Coria lead Gaudio 2 sets to none and looked well on his way to winning. But the crowd did the wave and somehow it seemed to relax Gaudio and he came all the way back to stun Coria in one of the all time grand slam final meltdowns.

Coria was never the same after that collapse and declined much faster than expected, wrecking his promising looking career. The 2004 French Open final remains one of the wildest grand slam finals ever
