Tanner buys Coot football team tickets to concert - legal???

Aug 22, 2018, 9:19 PM

It’s being reported that Ray Tanner bought the entire coot football team tickets to the Beyoncé and JayZ concert last night. I’m no rules expert, and surely Tanner has enough sense to check on this ahead of time, but I have to ask... is this a NCAA violation?

As far as I understand it, yes it's illegal. Under title IX, he would have had to take all Coot athletes, even the women's teams who nobody cares about, not even women.

Tanner should have waited

The concert didn't come close to being a sellout, and tickets were provided free to high schools all over the midlands.

Could be, cheap seats were 50.00 but ground level was up over a grand. I really have to think they’re not that stupid as to not check first.

violation is for a student athlete to

Receive any benefit that is not available to other students at the University. Illegal benefits are a topic that should concern every student-athlete, as it constitutes a serious violation of NCAA rules. ... Most student-athletes think of illegal benefits in terms of accepting gifts or money.

That was my understanding also, not just TitleIX, but all students. You can’t gift to athletes something that isn’t available to all students

First of all, who in their right mind would want to see those two in concert. 2nd, it's probably Tanner's way of thanking them for even coming to usuck.

A USC spokesperson clarified the tickets were considered a “team entertainment expense,” which are permissible for teams that are in season.

Just like our lake day,

And that day the team always goes to the beach and jet skis around when we go to the Orange bowl. Only football team participates.

Hence, that is termed "entertainment"? LOL

Certainly you could see where this could get out of hand

and become another recruiting war tactic. USuC goes to a Beyoncé concert. Clemson has a lake day. Maybe next year lake day includes a visit by some hot new music star. Then teams travel cross country to go to Disney for a day.

Harbaugh decides to take Michigan on a team outing to Switzerland to climb the Matterhorn. Urban decides a trip to the South American rain forest would be a nice team building excursion, so he books an 14 day cruise to South America.

The Clemson team gets to go to Frankie's Fun Park
in Greenville. What could be funner than that?

Beyonce and JayZ and COOTS are about the same level of trash anyway.

Funniest part of that is

Aug 23, 2018, 8:42 AM

That one of the morning chicken heads on 107.5, the morning of the concert here, in his tirade about Urban Meyer being a scum bag, was talking about how OSU was out of control and had taken the entire football team to the Beyoncé/Jay-Z concert. Went on and on about how it should be an NCAA violation.

He hasn't mentioned the Chicken squad going to the show.
