Central Heater went out...

Dec 29, 2020, 12:17 PM

Had noticed a exhaust type smell (gas heater) so I turned off and got someone here to check.

Needs about 4K in repairs on an already 25 year old unit, or get new one in 7-10k range. Guy recommended new unit of course. F!!!!

Hard to justify 4k repair bill on a unit that old when a new unit is only double that. Still lots of money. Just patched my 20 yr. old unit week before last but that was only $700. Probably get me by another year or two. Ah, the joys of ownershit.

Oil filled heaters will work mostly safe too. They look like the old radiator heaters but are electric and heat up oil inside the heater.

Sometimes if you have a good Dude...

Have him fix it, but maybe another estimate?

Otherwise you need time to make sure the replacement is what you need...Burner for NG units are the most expensive units to replace
Best of Luck

I agree. Get a second estimate. If you have a slit unit then go with single unit outside. Check the tonnage on your unit and make sure they are going to replace it with the same tonnage.

Is it the heat exchange?

Dec 29, 2020, 12:42 PM

because that sounds like an issue I had a few years back and it was the heat exchange. First estimate was 2400 to swap it out because you had to disassemble the unit. Second estimate was 800 for the same work with the same opinion. Third guy looked at it and told me that particular model allowed you to access the heat exchange from the outside like a drawer and he'd swap it for 300 which was basically parts and an hour of labor.

If anyone in the Columbia area needs HVAC work the third guy's name is Charlie and he runs Cooling Carolina. He won't work out in Northeast but if you are in cola or west of there, he's the guy to call.

I wouldn't want to work in NE Cola either***
