Go to the Buffalo Trace distillery. They make Elmore T, Colonel EH Taylor, and of course Pappy.

Van Winkle 23 year old

Sep 17, 2015, 10:04 AM

is excellent whiskey, I just can't afford to drink it very often. The bottling each October only yields something like 7 thousand cases and even the highbrow bars right in KY only get a few bottles a year.

The rest goes to NYC and SF to the big money bars and Wall St types who can afford to pay $1500 a bottle on the second hand market (face value of a bottle is around $250)

If you want to try it, Haymarket Whiskey Bar still had some last week. ($135 per drink).

Alternatively, I have been getting Larceny. It is not as smooth as Pappy, but it is a wheated bourbon and the mash bill is awfully close to PVW 23. At $25 a bottle it's a great buy.

I also like Woodford Reserve when I'm in the mood for a Bourbon with a lot of rye.

Knob Creek also has a great small batch rye whiskey (not a Bourbon) that is also delicious.

WL Weller 12 year is the same recipe as Pappy, but Pappy gets chosen first. It's easier to find at liquor stores.

Re: Van Winkle 23 year old

Sep 17, 2015, 3:47 PM

I agree. All of the Wellers are good. BT is good for the price. Now everything that Buffalo Trace makes is now harder to find and more expensive, since that is who produces PV. EC cast strength is good for the price.

For those who were wondering like me...

Sep 17, 2015, 3:07 PM

What's the difference between whiskey and bourbon?

What Makes a Bourbon: A Cheat Sheet
Must be made in the United States.
Must contain 51 percent corn.
Must be aged in new oak charred barrels.
Must be distilled to no more than 160 proof and entered into the barrel at 125 proof.
Must be bottled at no less than 80 proof.
Must not contain any added flavoring, coloring or other additives.

I don't drink any bourbon or rye anymore that isn't at least 100 proof.

There are just as many great buys on the bottom shelf as the top. Anyone who says different isn't real serious and hasn't tried enough of them especially blind side by side tasting.

You can't go wrong with OGDBIB, OGD114, EWBIB, AAA10*, RITTBIB and none of these are over $30 for a 750 anywhere.

Now Four Roses Single Barrel private selections are just over the top. Most are under $40 and they have ten different recipes.

I plan on opening a new bottle of Knob Creek Single Barrel tonight for the game.
