Should teams who opt out of bowls share in the bowl revenue?

Dec 14, 2020, 5:25 PM

I get the ACC has always split bowl revenue evenly amongst the league. However, this year we have teams who are likely to get an invitation opting out of not only the bowls but also the revenue that goes with them.

In an already lean fiscal year shouldn’t there be some consequences for just leaving money on the table?

The ACC has lost at least 4 tie ins so far due to Covid, will the Conference still get money from the Bowls even though they're not being played?

In my opinion yes there should be! I understand the argument against going to the bowl game - but why not stop with them even in a non-pandemic year if everyone is so concerned with if a player hasn't seen family members since fall camp. As someone who served a 4 "month" stretch where I didn't see my family was a cake walk are you kidding me. How about a year or two and in the mean time have people out to "due you in"!
Scholarships aren't cheap and the revenue from the TV deal helps ( direct or indirectly ). I mean, even if you have a bunch of kids who want to opt out; play the walk on players heck! Not just my selfish football fan saying that; but also - never put a kid out who doesn't want to be there. In normal years you had kids opting out of bowl games - but coaches always loved the idea of "more practice" and seeing how you will look next season! They also liked the exposure it brought the school on National TV.
Lots of other traditionally "positive things" can come out of it outside of "a cool road trip"! Sure that isn't happening - but all the other things can still happen.
Like anybody who has worked through the pandemic ( every day except any scheduled vacations or personal days and weekend) I know if you take the right measures "it's not as scary"! All you can do is - the best you can. Doesn't guarantee anything - but you put yourself in the best position for success.
Being in good position for success was part of the equation that equaled something positive for college football FBS coaches. I hope enough of them remember those things!
Those that don't - more power to them - just less $$$$$ to them as well! Just my opinion!
