Secondary next season looking good

Jan 18, 2016, 2:07 PM

CB 1: Tank
CB 2: Fields/Baker/Carter/maybe Mullen (this is an open competition with some real talent
SS: Wiggins
FS: Johnson

Replacing our safeties with 2 experienced players should keep us from missing a beat. If anything, I think we lose a little in the run stopping game, but we won't bust nearly as often with Wiggins and Johnson.

I'll take Baker at CB2. He's shown a lot more promise

than Fields or Carter at that position.

We would have two tall cornerback's with Tank and Baker

Jan 18, 2016, 2:20 PM

Not a bad thing, but we would need either Fields or Baker to match up with the short, quick receivers.

I dunno about Wiggins at safety...

Jan 18, 2016, 2:20 PM

I think he is a more natural fit at SAM. Maybe in certain cituatuons, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Van Smith win the open safety spot

Jefferie Gibson Van Smith and Tanner Muse. One of those will be beside Jadar. Wiggins with split time with Dorian.

Agreed. I was just about to ask what about these three? Tanner Muse came out of high school at what, 6'4" 220lbs, running a 4.45? And both Smith & Gibson had huge games against Miami this year.

Looks like our Saftey position could actually improve!! We all know his Green and Kearse looks towards the end of the year. I'm excited!!

Me too man! All these posts regarding our secondary had me getting worried last week, until I started looking at the depth chart and watching highlights. I have lofty expectations for Tanner Muse myself. I mean, by the Fall, it's not outrageous to think this kid is a chiseled 230lb safety running at 4.5, that's insane. Can you imaging running a post or cross pattern, looking up at the ball and meeting that full-speed? Dead.

Wiggins came in at safety

Jan 18, 2016, 2:31 PM [ in reply to I dunno about Wiggins at safety... ]

I think he moves back. I think we see more of O'Daniel next season because we won't have 2 linebacker sized safeties to help out with the run.

Dorian at Sam, Korrin at FS

Jan 18, 2016, 2:31 PM

Dorian at Sam is a huge upgrade, I have no idea why he wasn't in there during the Natty.

Wiggins is a baller anywhere as is Jadar.

Van Smith & Gibson can play too.

And it's easier to play D when DW4 spots you 21 pts early...can't wait to go to Tally.

I haven't seen O'Daniel have to cover down field much.

Jan 18, 2016, 2:38 PM

He plays the run well and is a terror on the kickoff team for sure.

He is plenty athletic enough to cover a T.E.

Jan 18, 2016, 2:40 PM

Since no one else seems willing to take on that job.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Depth and ability to play the run will be concerns.

Jan 18, 2016, 2:37 PM

I know that the safeties got exploited with the pass our last game but playing the run is as much or more important.

Re: Secondary next season looking good

I think tank and Johnson are only sure things but think baker is very likely macs spots and fields backs up tank or even moves to nickel role. Carter in mix as well with edmunds and chalmers depth.

I disagree on Wiggins I think he shares Sam with Odaniel. Smith takes other safety spot alongside Johnson with Gipson adding depth.

Y'all don't forget Muse in the secondary & Cservenka (sp) DL***
