On This Date: 1974 Clemson- 28 Georgia- 24

Oct 5, 2020, 8:45 AM

10/5/1974
Death Valley, SC

Rivalry Established

Football Historians suggest that the meeting between Clemson and UGA in 1974 in Death Valley was when the Rivalry Changed Forever.

The Tigers were fresh off an upset win over Georgia Tech after an 0-2 start to their '74 campaign.

.

The Bulldogs entered with a 2-1 record, as 10-point favorites on the road, and having not lost to the Tigers in 10 consecutive games over a period of nearly 20 years (1955).

For most of the game, Georgia's offense was rather effective, scoring three touchdowns on the ground: two by Horace King and a third from Andy "Breezy" Reid. In addition, quarterback Matt Robinson averaged almost 15 yards per pass attempt. Nevertheless, the Bulldogs had some serious issues on this afternoon. Even Erk Russell's recent switch from a five- to a six-man front to slow opposing ground games couldn't hold back the Tigers. Two Clemson quarterbacks — Mark Fellers and Mike O'Cain — were each responsible for two touchdowns while directing the Tigers' Veer offense to more than 300 yards rushing in a 28-24 upset victory in the Valley.

Sad that Clemson didn't go to a bowl game that year especially since
we beat UNC by 22 points and they went to one.

Odd memory from that game...

I have this memory of the opening kickoff being fielded by Georgia near the Clemson sideline. The return guy seemed to have caught the ball while drifting toward the sideline, and his momentum was clearly going to carry him out of bounds. Then, I think he just had a brain burp or something because, as he is about to go out of bounds, he pitched the ball backwards into play. It was like he thought he was playing basketball for a second and thought he would turn the ball over if he just ran out of bounds. I forget who recovered, but it definitely was a bad omen for Georgia that day.

That was a big game for Bennie Cunningham, and I think he had 2 TD receptions. I remember watching Vince Dooley's TV show the next day, and he was not happy. His comment was, "Cunningham is a man playing with boys." That was a good description of big Bennie.

Bennie is a player most forget played for Clemson. Beast!

Freshman year, I enjoyed singing " Hang down your head Vince Dooley ..."

I recall we kept cheering "Sun Bowl" towards the end of the unc game.

And listening to the tenn game on the radio was a heart breaker.

Perhaps I am disremembering, didn't they change the rule and push back how early bowls could invite teams after several bowl teams added late?

Good Times
