DESCRIPTIVE
vs
INFERENTIAL

The main difference between descriptive and inferential statistics is that descriptive statistics describe what the data show whereas with inferential statistics the goal is to reach conclusions that extend beyond the data in hand.

Peeps on Message Boards, not just this one, compare descriptive stats and try to draw inferences from them.

Much, much more goes into Inferential Statistics. To be able to draw inferences about unknown/future events much data and many assumptions must be made.

The biggest issue seen here is the Sample. Did the samples come from similar populations? Did the teams play similar teams?

Another issue is change. How does older performance relate to more recent performance?

In the more successful football prediction schemes a weighting is given for recency.

MickeyMouse sells ads, those stats ae probably effective selling ads. See if Mickey will back up his prediction by taking a bet.

Guido takes bets. Guids sez LSU has 67% chance of winning. Guido disagrees with Mickey.

Mickey keeps selling ads, right or wrong.

Guido keeps building casinos but only because he is right more often than he is wrong.

I can infer that Guido is going to build a new casino off the money being wagered by LSU fans. Guido knows the money is staying with him not going back to LSU fans.

The underdog is 3-2 straight-up in the CFP National Championship games. Also you should be concerned that 93% of money is on LSU yet the line isn't even close to double digits.

I honestly don't know the details on betting, cause I don't bet. However, I think all of the Guidos out there set the line, and Clemson is 10-3 against the line this year. That tells me that Guido has historically underestimated Clemson.

It will certainly be a game to watch. Both teams have been performing very well lately. Does LSU get complacent after their big win or are they "rested up?" Does Clemson have an edge after the OSU game or are they banged up? Dunno! I think it will be closer than last year's Championship. Of course, I thought last year's Championship would be closer than it was.

we just beat the best, most balanced team in college football, and the best OSU team ever (if you believe what the pundits say), so there's that.

the final SCORE. We will give you more total yardage, better pass completion percentage, more yards passing, rushing, special teams, whatever you want that will make you more comfortable with coming up short on the scoreboard. You can even build you a STAT-ue.

Re: STATISTICS:

You OP was are herring fallacy and bit of an anchoring fallacy.

Nothing specific to the definition of descriptive/inferential statistics has any real meaning towards the outcome of the game.

Basically, you are trying to declare a winner of a monopoly game buy reading the rulesheet.

In addition, inferential statistics is generally dependent on a RANDOM SAMPLE. There is no such random sample possible based on the mechanism whereby we draw from the two teams seasons. At best, we can get to quasi-experimental level and account for measurement error (RCAC). Again, the issue is that you are trying to define something from the general to the specific.

That being said, descriptive statistics literally describes what we see in our data... for example, the last two SEC games, the LSU defensive has not seen an offense that would be ranked higher than 7th in in the ACC. Thus LSU's defense of late in indicative of a defense playing some rather lousy offenses.
