SI's 10 Greatest Games in CFB History

Aug 12, 2019, 1:53 PM

https://www.si.com/college-football/2019/best-games-college-football-history-rankings?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=si-ncaafb&utm_source=twitter.com&xid=socialflow_twitter_si

Pretty good list, although LSU-Bama '11 shouldn't sniff a spot--being a "close" game between two highly ranked teams shouldn't be the criteria for inclusion, that game was boooooooring as ####.

Some others that merit consideration:

- 1991 FSU-Miami ("Wide Right I")
- 2006 OSU-Michigan
- 2008 Texas-Texas Tech
- 2012 Bama-TAMU
- 2013 FSU-Auburn (BCS Championship)

What else?

Here's a few worth considering...

Aug 12, 2019, 2:13 PM

1984 - Frank Reich comes off the bench and leads Maryland back from 31-0 to beat Miami

2007 - Appalachian St. over Michigan (How many batteries does it take to beat Michigan? Just 1-AA)

1968 - Harvard beats Yale 29-29

1982 - Cal beats Stanford...and their band

1993 Notre Dame 31 vs FSU 24

1982 Cal 25 Stanford 20 - "the band is on the field" game

Probably a weaker case:

2007 App State 34 at Michigan 32

2007 Stanford 24 at USC 23 - mostly just notable because it was the largest point spread loss in CFB history with USC being something like a 42 point favorite.

Probably tons of others

the 2013 FSU vs Aweburnt was a good game.

The the Texas/USC was not as good as DW4 to Renfrow. Technically the USC/Texas game didn't count due to all them vacated wins by USC... plus, which is a better story line, Young carrying a team or a walk-on slaying the football Goliath.

But my #1 non-Clemson came is 2007 Fiesta Bowl (BSU over OU)

plus, where is 2007 Michigan/App State (the little guys!)

I know it really didn't have the implications..

of most of these games, but the seven overtime, 74-72 Texas A&M over LSU game from this year needs to be on that list. It was a great football game.

I'm pretty sure the 1987 Clemson-UGA game

Aug 12, 2019, 8:33 PM

is still the best, most exciting game I ever saw in person. And yeah, I've been to both the recent Natty games. Not many games end with a game-winning FG WITH THE CLOCK RUNNING. Plus a spectacular safety in the last few minutes. Took amazing offense, defense and special teams to win that game.

Do yourself a favor and watch the last 15 minutes (1:55 to 2:11).

At least ONE of the 1980's Clemson-UGA games needs to be in there, that was college football without peer. 1986 at UGA was a humdinger too. And even though we lost, the 84 game with Kevin Butler hitting the NCAA record 60 yard FG on the final play. Classic Larry Munson call:

That was an exceptional rivalry. I was at all those games, from 1980 (one of several we coulda shoulda won) forward.

Miami-Nebraska 1984? NC when Irving Fryer drops the 2 point conversion.

Ohio State’s National Championship game about 2002 where they were big underdogs.

Clemson NC over Bama 2016 is the best of all time.

I guess I should have read the article first. 2 of those 3 are in there.
