Roll Call: Chicago -> South Bend

1

Jan 23, 2020, 8:34 AM

It’s still a bit early, but just wondering how many people are planning to attend the game at ND and stay in Chicago.

If so, how do you plan to get to South Bend? Rent a car? Train? Bus? Hitch hike?

Driving. And not going near Chicago. I’ve heard they shoot people there

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

just like any big city, that stuff happens in bad areas

Jan 23, 2020, 1:59 PM

I lived in Atlanta for years and never had any trouble cause I didn’t go to Bankhead.

And don't allow you to shoot back!***

Chicago is a great city. Stay downtown and you will have a great time. All the shootings happen in a very segreagated specific area that is not near where you would be staying.

Plan is to drive to (and stay in) Merrillville, IN, where we’re meeting up with family from Missouri. Approximately 1 hour from South Bend.

Hoping to get enough tix through IPTAY; but the family we’re meeting up with, has ND connections, so there’s plan B on getting into the game.

If that doesn’t work (ie., not having to buy on the aftermarket at $4-500 per ticket), then I am going to save enough $$$ by NOT making the trip to finally pull the trigger on that 83” Samsung QLED TV! ??????????

Also, a half dozen hotel rooms at the Hampton Inn will open back up.....

Whatever choice(s) you make makes you. Choose wisely.

Merrillville is an excellent choice. If you don’t have a reason otherwise to be in Chicago, staying in Merrillville means you skip the drives in and out of Chicago. The highways entering the city on the south end and the drive to get to South Bend can be-usually are-horribly congested with truck traffic. I don’t want to scare anybody off-it’s doable, just not pleasant. There’s no reason to subject yourself to it if a stay in the city isn’t part of your plans.

Can you recommend a hotel? ***

When we played Notre Dame many years ago, my wife, daughter and I flew with a group out of Charlotte. Left Charlotte that AM, flew to Chicago and had a private bus to South Bend. Soon after the game. we took the bus back to Chicago and flew back to Charlotte. Was a one day trip but not too stressful. It was a fun trip.

I will be going through Indianapolis.

Jan 23, 2020, 1:56 PM

The company I work for is based near there. A couple of the guys in my office are ND grads. Should be fun.

We will probably stay at the Hilton on Michigan Ave in Chicago. The 2 hour drive on Saturday should be no problem. If it was week day, no way.

Downtown Chicago is as nice and as safe a city as I ever been. Just don't go to the south side and off the beaten path and you'll be safe. Everything you need is within walking distance of the Hilton. You walk under LSD and go to Museums or walk up Michigan Ave to the shopping district and one of largest NIKE stores in the world. Although the Trump Tower is much closer to the shopping.

Another good hotel is the Almafi near shopping and Gino's Pizza. Enjoy the city if you that's what you choose. And there are plenty of good bars around. We used to do a St. Patty's day Pub Crawl in the city every year.

I looked at Hilton brand hotels downtown Chicago and that weekend the prices range between $87 to $116 a night + taxes and parking.

I haven’t not talked to any Clemson fan that says they aren’t going.

Jan 23, 2020, 4:02 PM

Hopefully, Notre Dame will open basketball arena and do old-school closed-circuit for the 50,000 Clemson fans planning to go. No way everyone gets into stadium.

When I'm going to SB for work I always stay in Benton Harbor. Great place, great golf course and close to SB.
