Recruiting in the 1980s

Feb 25, 2019, 5:51 PM

While I do remember the 1980s very, very well ( teen years). Before the internet, it
was very difficult to keep up with recruiting or get any real news. Do any of you
remember who were a few of the top prosects that came to Clemson up to the early 90s?
Those were HIGHLY recruited that ended up signing with Clemson.

Thanks!

ClemTig,Bussie would have been one of the best ever to put on a Clemson uniform if Danny had not been run off. He was the meanest SOB I ever seen.

My roommate recruited him to Clemson. He was responsible for New Jersey. Here is a list of players I remember him recruiting (and I was friends with most)

Eric Harmon OG (his first recruit)
Joe Henderson, RB
Kelvin Hankins, OT
Tony Kennedy, DB
Arthur Bussie, DL

He recruited others, too.

I was living near Fayetteville, NC at the time and had to wait on the Tuesday delivery of the Orange & White to get the real news. Pete Yannity was a young sports reporter at the Florence, SC station (WBTW, I think). If I held our antenna outside the window just right on a clear night...Pete would often give a recruiting update during the 11pm broadcast.

Michael Carr, who never got much PT and left before a full year, was a Parade All-American.

Good memories from the 1980’s!!

I remember getting the O&W - and reading it all the way thru... Also looking at the media guide and reading all the accolades for the recruits - they were extremely talented!!

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!

We signed 5 Parade all Americans in 1988
McGlockton
Junior Hall
Gardocki
Mouzon
Hankins
That was one of the top 3 classes in the country and at that time you only had Parade, USA Today ,and very few other recruiting gurus.

And here’s a link where you can go year by year....

Starting with 1981 they list singees just below the rosters.
