Alabama Culture

Oct 7, 2020, 12:13 PM

A guy says to the clerk, "I'd like an R O C Cola and a moon pie".The clerk says, " are you from Alabama?" The guy says, "Well yes I am, but I'm a little offended you would ask me that . If I had asked for fish and chips, would you have asked me if I was from England?" The clerk says, "well, no. I reckon not." The guy says, "if I had asked for crepe suzette and champaign, would you have asked me if I was from France?" "No, probably not"."Well why when I walk in here and ask for an R O C Cola and a moon pie, why do you ask me if I was from Alabama?" "Well, sir, this is a hardware store."

I grew up in Alabama and their educational system.

And, I know how to spell, "champagne". Just sayin'

It’s “sham pain.”

If you drink too much, it's "shame pain".***

Ray Stevens, singing "Ahab the Arab," used the term, except he said ROC co cola, "sippin on an ROC co cola."

What does the "O" stand for in R O C Cola? I've heard of and had RC Cola but not ROC Cola.

Around the country stores outside of Orangeburg in the 50s

Oct 7, 2020, 1:26 PM

it was pronounced R-ah C Co-Cola. Sometimes a Moon Pie was requested to complete the meal, but usually the request was for:

An R-ah C Co-cola, a Flyin' On and 2 cigarettes.

For those not educated in the language of Orangeburg, a "Flyin' On" was a "Flying Saucer" - also known as a "Flying One" by some who were entirely too educated.

And if you don't know what a Flying Saucer was, it was a Honey Bun.

I always tried to take my bird hunting breaks at the country stores along the highways and marveled at the money made by store owners opening a $0.30 cigarette package and selling them one at a time for 1 or 2 cents each.

Buy the RC and a bag of peanuts, put the peanuts in the RC...it was great!

Peanuts in a Mountain Dew good too?

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've never heard RC Cola pronounced ROC Cola.

Oct 7, 2020, 2:27 PM

How can someone put an O in the middle of trying to say RC?

That's even worse than putting a P in Clemson. ;)
