Bama's recruiting numbers tell a story...

Jan 14, 2021, 11:22 AM

Bama has 29 4 and/or 5 stars on their team.
Clemson is tied with OcryO for second with 17.

For Bama, 9 are OL, 8 are DL.

For OcryO, 7 are OL, 7 are DL

For Clemson, 4 are on the OL and 5 are on the DL

Doesn't take a genius to see where we need to pick things up in recruiting AND development.

That's enough for a two deep after you allow for injuries, slow developers, and some that were wrongly evaluated. We need 4-5 good ones in the 2022 recruiting class imo, and 3-5 every year thereafter.

Agree games are won in the trenches and this year our trenches were a little on the muddy side. Go Tigers and lets hope our trenches this year will be on par with Bama and Ohio St.

That's not the only area...

or the only difference.

Over the last five years, Bama has not signed a class with fewer than 21 players and they only did that once. They sign between 24 and 29 players each year for an average of 25 per class.

Clemson, on the other hand, had one class with just 14 players and another with just 17, for a five year average of 21 per class.

So in the last four years, Alabama signs 104 recruits. Only allowed 85 scholarships. What happened to the 19 recruits?

like all schools, they release some players.***

They either transferred or they were sent packing.

Jan 14, 2021, 5:08 PM [ in reply to Re: That's not the only area... ]

Key Reasons for increased signings:

- Early departures for NFL
- Transfers
- Occasional suspension (though Bama has very little issue here....especially when compared to UGA).

IMO the breakdown isn't as much the problem....

Jan 14, 2021, 11:37 AM

It's the 4 and 5 star misses and busts we've had recently.

We've had more these past few years than when we were winning it all.

I know this board doesn't like using that term for college kids, but that's what it is. Sometimes you miss on player assessment. Bama never misses. All their 4 and 5 stars produce at a high level.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Also we previously had 3 stars that exceeded expectations..

Jan 14, 2021, 11:40 AM

Now we have many 3 stars that are JAGs (just a guy).

If they never miss , how do you explain the 19 that are gone .

Bama misses...

but on the rare occasions what that happens, they just run them off and replace them with other 4 and 5-star players.

How are you figuring those numbers?

Jan 14, 2021, 11:48 AM

Bama usually has 60+ 4/5 star guys on their 85 man roster.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

using numbers from 24/7 recruiting stats

Jan 14, 2021, 11:54 AM

but they do NOT have 60+

I believe i was asking a legit question... not something to

Jan 14, 2021, 2:54 PM

prompt a downvote and internet flex.

Over the last 5 cycles, Bama has signed 22 5* players, 86 4* players, and 21 players rated 3* or below. About 80% of their scholarship players are typically blue chip recruits.

I was wondering if you were looking a specific subsection of their roster or something because the 29 number seems very low to me, as does the 17 for Clemson and OSU. Was it 29 of their 2 deep or something?

Re: I believe i was asking a legit question... not something to

Jan 14, 2021, 4:27 PM

First of all I didn’t TD you. Why would I do that. You didn’t say anything wrong. The numbers are from 24/7 and from Fox Sports Radio recruiting and roster lists. I believe my sports director pulled the data from the last game on the field. How many 4 and 5 stars played in the game. I’ll have to ask but I think that’s what he reported. If you don’t mind, where did you get your numbers? In my line of work we have to question things like “about 80%” and “typically blue chip.” We only report or quote data from verifiable sources.

OL Recruiting and evaluation has to Improve.

Jan 14, 2021, 12:23 PM

We hit on some under-valued OL who where better than their star rating! I think that's why we ended up winning it all in 16 and 18.
We have not been as good on the OL and it shows. DL hasn't been as good either the last two years - although this past season we were good just young!

We must get better in the trenches or it's back to the Tajh Boyd days of Clemson football. We beat teams we should beat - but can't beat more physical teams!

Re: OL Recruiting and evaluation has to Improve.

Jan 14, 2021, 4:48 PM

Our 5 stars on the OL in the past have gone undrafted. Maybe Jackson can break the streak? It DOES pose some troubling questions though.

What does our staff need to recruit better?

Jan 14, 2021, 4:29 PM

I was under the impression that they have the facilities and support staff needed to recruit excellent classes. Are there additional things they need?

I was also under the impression that they generally get who they want, and have obviously done that with our highly ranked classes recently. Sure, there have been some misses since we can't get everyone we want, but they seem to be pleased with who they bring in and they are elite classes based on the rankings.

Or is this solely a coaching/development issue?

Good thread - but this is the part of the sport that makes my head hurt.

I truly respect - and appreciate - our coaching, recruiting and support staff for the work they put into this. And I respect all of you that can dig/delve into the numbers, ins and outs and process of recruiting.

For me, Al Davis nailed it: Just win baby!!
