Our SOS with UofSC

Nov 26, 2019, 8:21 AM

I saw someone make the remark that UofSC hurt our SOS and so it got me thinking. As sad as it is, they will actually help our perceived SOS. I certainly would not argue that they are better than our average opponent but they are very much so by the SP+ and FPI.

UofSC ranks 43 and 35 in the SP+ and FPI respectively. Our only opponent that ranks higher than them in either poll is, you guessed it, Texas A&M, our other SEC opponent. I know that UNC beat them, but UofSC actually ranks ahead of them in both polls. UofSuC actually ranks higher than both of the OOC teams that beat them in the FPI.

Take it for what it is worth, but UofSuC actually improved the Strength of Schedule for every single team that it faced this year, including Texas A&M which I believe was the toughest in the country. A&M's average opponent outside of UofSC for the FPI was ranked 44.3 or just over 9 spots worse than UofSC. The average ranking of our opponents without the SEC is 70.9, with A&M but not UofSC 65.3 and with the coots 62.5.

Maybe SEC bias is not all bad.

ESPN's SP and FPI are not a reflection of strength. Just ask

App. State, or Missouri, Tennessee, or A&M who pounded SCAR 30-6. SCAR has lost 4 of their last 5 games. If not for UGA turning the ball over four times, SCAR would have lost 7 of their last 9 games.

this is the problem with formulaic rankings

Nov 26, 2019, 8:31 AM

team that gets ranked higher than a team that flat out beat them head to head. Even worse for Uof5uc it was a neutral site game and a loss to App state at home.

The problem with these formulas and computer rankings is there is a HUMAN inputing the initial data and parameters. People can say a computer is unbiased, but the truth is the computer didnt program itself. Someone assigns and inputs data ranking/grades for each team and each player for the computer to begin its computations. If the initial data is wrong (as in a team being over rated from the beginning), the final result will be worthless.
