any old farts out there remember the Franz Klammer run to

win gold in the downhill on his final run? Innsbruck Austria, 1976. Still one of the damnedest things I've ever seen in sports. He threw himself down that course with reckless abandon, was constantly on the verge of wiping out, but somehow kept from falling. It was frigging amazing...
For me, it ranks right up there with the Miracle on Ice for great Winter Olympics moments.

Yes, it was wild and highly entertaining. If my memory serves me, Bernhard Russi or Rossi? Won the Silver medal.

I was a student at Clemson during that time and remember Franz well. I also remember the PCP owned by the Brooks family. The son, Tommy Brooks, now owns Harley Davidson of Greenville.

It was astonishing. There's been nothing like that run since. Thousands of Austrians lined the course pulling for him.

Yes it was absolutely amazing! I don't want to steal the OP's thunder but a couple of other factors are worth noting. Russi made his run early in the day. In fact he was the third guy out. Conditions were good and Russi posted a blistering time. As the day went along the course became icy and Russi's time held up. By the time Klamner got to the starting line as the last man of the day, there wasn't much hope that he would beat Russi as the slope was treacherous. The rest is history. Truly a monumental performance.

Run by Klammer like it was yesterday. That has to go down as one of the greatest athletic feats in history. Dud comes out of nowhere and completely sacrifices his body to accomplish what seemed to be an insurmountable time.
Thanks for being that up and reminding us of that remarkable event!
